Roller Coasters

If you love roller coasters, this tape probably won't be a substitute for riding in the front car--but it may help you plan your next vacation. The tape offers a first-person perspective ride on most of the coasters, filmed in 3-D. Two pairs of 3-D glasses are included, but the effect is only occasionally noticeable. Fortunately, the footage is just as exciting viewed without them.

If you love roller coasters, this tape probably won't be a substitute for riding in the front car--but it may help you plan your next vacation. This 67-minute tour climbs aboard 16 coasters in the U.S., including the oldest still in operation, the Jack Rabbit in Kennywood, Pennsylvania, built in 1921; the tallest (at the time this tape was produced, 1996), Wild Thing in Scakopee, Minnesota, featuring a 200-foot drop; and the highest, the High Roller, which twists at an altitude of 1,000 feet at the Top of the World in Las Vegas. The tape offers a first-person perspective ride on most of the coasters, filmed in 3-D. Two pairs of 3-D glasses are included, but the effect is only occasionally noticeable. Fortunately, the footage is just as exciting viewed without them.

America's Greatest Roller Coaster Thrills may make you dizzy. It might make you grab the arms of your chair and scream. It could even make you sick to your stomach. Yes, that's how good it is. A roller coaster is one of those things, like licorice or Grateful Dead music, that not everyone likes, but if people do like it, they like it a lot. And this tape is a treat for those fanatics who just can't get enough of the joys of speed, vertigo, and disorientation. Profiling more than a dozen coasters across America, the video includes interviews with roller coaster designers and aficionados, although the great rides steal the show. The camera climbs aboard the ride so the viewer gets to experience roller coasters from the point of view of a passenger. And there are plenty of wild camera angles as the new generation of thematic roller coasters feature not only intense drops, but often have a portion of the ride where the passengers, and in this case the camera, find themselves speeding along while upside down. The camera work is excellent throughout, and though it isn't a substitute for that churning in your guts when the roller coaster you're riding begins an impossibly steep drop, this is about as good as it can get on video. --Robert J. McNamara

Richard Barth departs from his popular series featuring elderly sleuth Margaret Binton to introduce Dr. Samuel Garvey, the best and most daring roller coaster designer in the country, and to take his readers on the ride of their lives.
Garvey is now at work on his masterpiece, the Jumper, for the Angelus Corporation in Texas. The Jumper will do just that-the two cars will jump tracks with each other in the middle of the ride travelling over a 60 foot gap 75 feet in the air. This is the ride that will make or break Garvey as a designer and he is taking every step to insure that it is successful.
While in the middle of designing Jumper, he receives a phone call from Rachael White of the National Transportation Safety Board. She explains to him that there was an accident at the Cyclone in Coney Island and that she would like his help. It soon becomes clear that the accident wasn't an accident, but sabotage. What is even more disturbing is that the assailant left a note tying the crash to other recent "accidents" and threatening to strike again. But where? And why?
As the mystery unfolds and another tragedy is barely averted, the danger is closer to Garvey than he ever could have imagined. Not only is someone after his reputation, but also his life. An exhilarating novel that will leave you as breathless as the passengers on the Jumper.

Want to build an empire without all the usual bloodshed? Try RollerCoaster Tycoon, which puts you in total control of a theme park, managing every detail from ride development to rescuing lost guests. A simulator in the style of SimCity, this game has a simple enough concept: build a park attractive enough to draw in hoards of tourists and then separate them from their hard-earned money. This is accomplished by researching and building rides, along with amenities, gardens and decorations.
Once you have your infrastructure, and the staff to maintain it, it's time to sit back and watch the funds roll in...all in hopes of building an even bigger rollercoaster somewhere else!
The big draws in a theme park, the coasters are expensive and flashy. They lure in thrill-seeking guests prepared to pay top dollar for a wild ride. RollerCoaster Tycoon even allows you to design the coasters yourself, a finicky but ultimately rewarding operation.

Roller Coaster Tycoon is one of the few games ever released that seems to appeal to gamers of every type, and the Loopy Landscapes expansion pack will appeal to all RCT fans. The only slight letdown is the lack of new rides. As the name suggests, the main focus of this expansion pack is new terrain and themes.
One of the best aspects of Loopy Landscapes is that it lets you personalize your park in ways that weren't possible in the original game. Open a hat stall, T-shirt stand, or nearly any other shop and choose a color for each of your items. It's a hoot to watch a herd of hapless fun-seekers walk through your park wearing a rainbow of caps and holding an equally colorful assortment of balloons. We also had a blast working our way through the new scenarios included with the package, which incorporate all the new themes and settings (such as the icy Winter Wonderland and majestic Medieval Castles) and range in difficulty from sedate fun to frenzied puzzle solving.
As an additional bonus, the complete content from the first expansion pack, Corkscrew Follies, is included on the CD. (This expansion pack requires Roller Coaster Tycoon to operate.)
