At Last, A Way to Teach Writing July 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
When I was a kid back in grade school writing was assigned not taught. We hated writing more than any other assignment type. The first (and biggest) stumbling block was usually, "What should I write about?" Typically, the assignment wasn't started until the night before it was due and, as you can imagine, the quality of the finished product was pretty poor.
Blueprint for Exceptional Writing provides a set of strategies that enable a teacher to actually TEACH writing in an organized and structured manner. A writing assignment is completed in the classroom in a step by step process with the students and teacher interacting throughout each step. Time is set aside on a day-by-day basis for two to three weeks for each writing assignment. At the end of that time period each student - including those with special needs - completes a writing piece he or she can be proud of. Then each student assignment is celebrated by being PUBLISHED using one of dozens of publishing suggestions provided by the authors.
Each step in the process works because it has been validated by research. Although the phases and steps in the Blueprint process are general in nature, the authors show how they can be applied to the most commonly required genres in state high-stakes tests. The book also includes a DVD showing one of the authors in an actual classroom environment teaching each phase of the Blueprint process.
The bottom line is that students produce quality written work and enjoy the process from beginning to end. Sure wish writing was taught this way when I was a kid.
