Product Description Image and Video Compression Standards: Algorithms and Architectures presents an introduction to the algorithms and architectures that underpin the image and video compression standards, including JPEG (compression of still images), H.261 (video teleconferencing), MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 (video storage and broadcasting). In addition, the book covers the MPEG and Dolby AC-3 audio encoding standards, as well as emerging techniques for image and video compression, such as those based on wavelets and vector quantization. The book emphasizes the foundations of these standards, i.e. techniques such as predictive coding, transform-based coding, motion compensation, and entropy coding, as well as how they are applied in the standards. How each standard is implemented is not dealt with, but the book does provide all the material necessary to understand the workings of each of the compression standards, including information that can be used to evaluate the efficiency of various software and hardware implementations conforming to the standards. Particular emphasis is placed on those algorithms and architectures that have been found to be useful in practical software or hardware implementations. Audience: A valuable reference for the graduate student, researcher or engineer. May also be used as a text for a course on the subject.

A good practical book October 14, 2005 A good practical book which try to address real world image and video compression designs, but it is inaccurate, typos, ....
A good overview of a multidisciplinary theme. March 25, 2000 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is a good text on compression techniques for video and audio signals for industry and academia alike. It serves as a good introduction to the signal processing aspects (without requiring a sophisticated mathematical background) and quickly delves into the practical aspects of implementation. It explains the hardware architectures, and software choices and tradeoffs that one would encounter in the implementation of video compression standards (MPEG 1,2, H.263 etc) and provides an introduction to audio standards like AC-3 and MPEG audio as well. The book also often lists important feature sets of current products in the market. The parts that I found most useful are the discussions (with block diagrams) of ICs and solutions from vendors like C-Cube and TI and the discussion on media processors like Trimedia, MPact etc. At the end of every chapter, resources for further probing are outlined for the interested reader. This book is perhaps most useful to someone with some digital signal processing background, to get an overview of problems and approaches to image, audio and video compression in the industry. The price is somewhat high, but the investment may be worth it for your company, or yourself!
