Product Description A thorough reference that sheds light on the promising field of solid-state lighting Solid-state lighting is a rapidly emerging field. Light Emitting Diodes are already used in traffic signals, signage/contour lighting, large area displays, and automotive applications. But its greatest future lies in the possibility of applying solid-state lamps to general lighting. Solid-state lighting promises to reduce energy consumption as much as fifty percent, cut down on carbon-dioxide emission, and even spur the development of a completely new lighting industry. Giving this important emerging field the attention it deserves, Introduction to Solid-State Lighting comprehensively covers: * The history of lighting * The characterization of visible light * Conventional light sources * LED basics * Extraction of light from high-brightness LEDs * White LED * Applications of solid-state lamps

Solid book but....... March 14, 2004 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is a really good book for someone who is invloved in the subject, otherwise it is a readers nightmare, I lost count on the times the author writes " but not have been fully understood"...all he does in Ch4 and Ch5 is tell you what someone designed and what they achieved, it is like he copied and pasted technical journal papers into this book, I would not advice anyone on buying it, hard work have been put in it, but it is still a BAD book.....consider LEDs by schubert.....
A solid book on solid-state lighting September 8, 2002 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is an extraordinary book dealing for the first time with an emerging area of solid-state lighting. The book covers all subjects from intriguing history of lighting to the basics of solid state light emitters to numerous applications in biology, medicine, industry, and specialized and general lighting. A must to have for many scientists, engineers, and students.
