Miserly with plot points October 15, 2008 This guy hoards plot points like he's gonna run out! What gives? Why the hesitation to dish out real character changes and real events? It makes the novel so monochromatic.
Waaaaaay too much repetition in this installment in what's overall a pretty good series. It just felt like the characters spent all their time in the same three rooms talking about the same three things. I don't need to read any more about the real Jack vs the mythic Jack-- unless there's something new to talk about. I don't need to read any more about the Madame President or whatever and her jealousy or non-jealousy or whatever. I just got old!
Why the reluctance to give more detail about the aliens? Why the reluctance to have more space battles? Why the reluctance to have more action take place on the ships or have them put into port somewhere so they can get off the ship and have Jack go meet some freakin' new people for once? It's a novel, you can do anything you want!
I'll still get the next novel in this series, but man I hope it's better than this one.
Starting to Drag October 9, 2008 I agree with everyone else who said this book was a step back from the previous three. The battles felt flat, I'm starting to get tired of the stock "isn't it funny how the Navy still does ____ but no one remembers why?" type scenes, and there was absolutely ZERO character or plot development in this chapter of the overall saga
Basically, other than having two people admit they're attracted to each other, nothing special happens for 300 pages.
Valiant felt, to me, like it was rushed out to satisfy a schedule. I had alot of trouble visualizing the things that the book was describing, a first in this series, and when I got to the end of the book I felt like I'd just read the first chapter of a story
Loved the first three, hope the next two are WAY better than this. If book 5 isn't a big step up I won't bother with book 6
Great SCI FI book September 23, 2008 This is book 4. You should read the book in order. This is the best group of books I have read in a long time. If you like non-stop action these books are for you. Well worth your money.
Another solid sequel September 18, 2008 If you enjoyed the previous volumes of the series you won't be disappointed. Four star rating reflects no so much the quality of the story but the remarkable consistency starting with volume one. Don't mean the book's not good. It is. Not the best SF novel I've ever read but most certainly an entertaining read. There are a few weak points like excessive soul searching and self disparaging discourses on the main protagonists part that sometimes were rather tiresome overall pretty solid job I'd say. Start with volume one and you'll know soon enough whether you'll like the rest.
Redundent September 2, 2008 Good story still but less and less pages each book plus he keeps wasting pages on explaining everything everybook i mean if your reading book 4 and dont know how the meeting room works just give up reading
