Product Description This leading K-8 math methods text has the most coverage of the NCTM standards, the strongest coverage of middle school mathematics, and the highest student approval of any text currently available. Elementary and Middle School Mathematics provides an unparalleled depth of ideas and discussion to help students develop a real understanding of the mathematics they will teach. John Van de Walle, one of the foremost experts on how children learn mathematics, finds that 80 percent of the students who purchase this book keep it for reference when they begin their professional teaching careers. This text reflects the NCTM Principles and Standards and the benefits of constructivist-or student-centered-mathematics instruction. Moreover, it is structured for maximum flexibility, offering 24 brief, compartmentalized chapters that may be mixed and matched to fit any course or teaching approach.

Useful tool for soon to-be elementary school teachers September 30, 2008 I bought this book for a 400 level college course in teaching elementary math. It provides several different ways of presenting and thinking about a concept for the teacher to be familiar with. The book also lists hundreds of short activities and a ton of online resources and supplements. As far as a text book goes it is easy to read and comprehend.
Great Book! September 23, 2008 I really think this book has a lot to offer for elementary edu. students. It gives a variety of ways to teach kids math. I used some of the techniques on my own kids and they were surprised to see some great alternative ways to learn how to do math problems differently. Definitely a book I will keep to use in the future!
This is not the correct book I ordered, but too late to return. September 9, 2008 The picture used to show this book was incorrect. I ended up getting an older edition. This book will not fit my class. Unable to return book. Make sure seller has the right picture for the front of the book before buying.
Great Teaching Resource Book July 18, 2008 I bought this book for the Math Methods class in my credential program. I think it will be a book I will use as a great resource when teaching Math. I highly recommend this book to any teacher that teaches or will teach math.
Best Math Methods Book February 17, 2008 I have only worked with this book for a few weeks but am very pleased with what I am experiencing. There are numerous graphs, suggestions with ways to engage students, and internet links are available for teaching suggestions and math games.
This book clearly explains the material using visual supports like graphs and diagrams in bright colors. Internet sights for lesson suggestions, assessment and lesson reinforcing games. A great tool and a good resource that I plan to keep on hand.
