Product Description
In today's frenetic society, people rarely develop intimate friendships. Instead, they spend their lives essentially disconnected from others, rushing through life content with brief visits and casual conversations. But what if one were to develop a community, a spiritual community, of people who walked with and supported each other through life's journey? A community of real friends who listened to each other's personal tragedies without merely trying to fix the problems, who encouraged and nurtured each other's strengths, and who accepted people for who they really are, instead of the image they try to portray. In The Safest Place on Earth, Larry Crabb explores such a place, where God can heal disconnected people and allow them to reconnect with each other and, ultimately, with Him.

1 out of 5 stars Fancy words, but impractical for spiritual guidance.   April 18, 2008
Our Bible study group began a series based on this book. After painfully going through 2/3 of the book we finally voted to get rid of it. In the past several years, we've alternated between studying the Bible and studying books and we've had many excellent and practical discussions that greatly helped our growth. This book was the first disappointment. The language is grand and fluffy, but despite earnest attempts and diligent discussion, we failed to glean anything from it that would be helpful in our spiritual walk. Your mileage may vary.

5 out of 5 stars A True in Need in the Body   January 18, 2008
Genuine fellowship is a true need in the church, Crabb approaches the issue with a fresh perspective and helpful insights.

5 out of 5 stars How Larry Crabb describes Christian Community   August 24, 2007
Dr. Crabb does a great job laying out true biblical spiritual community. A must read for any serious Christian interested in connecting with people and God.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Crabb is NOT a mystic!!   July 19, 2006
I would like to say at the outset loud and clear that LARRY CRABB IS NOT A MYSTIC. He believes in the New Covenant, the biblical concept of the indwelling Spirit. This is NOT mysticism, and Dr. Crabb does not embrace or teach mystical concepts or practices. God Himself tells us that if we are believers, He sends His Spirit to dwell in us to guide and teach us; and although mysterious, this is NOT MYSTICISM.

The visions presented in this book of community and relationships made my heart race. I "saw" how life could be, how God intends it to be for us. If you are looking for a "how-to" guide, this is not it (that would be legalism). If you want a vision of life in the Spirit (living for God, God living and flowing through us), then you must realize that is the Spirit's work and not ours. Some readers may be perhaps racing to the end of the book to see how to achieve this new life - those readers will be disappointed; although there are things we can do to help us RECOGNIZE the Spirit, and perhaps not work against it, there is nothing we can do to BRING ABOUT the Spirit's work in our lives.

Dr. Crabb also does not believe that every psychological problem is a spiritual one (the real organic disorders). However, I have been counseling with one of his contemporaries for over a year now and I can tell you that every single "issue" in my life is a result of my sin, my separation from God, my selfishness, my self-protection, putting myself first and not trusting God to be all He says He is. Yes, my sin is a result of the fall, but THAT IS NO EXCUSE FOR ME TO CONTINUE TO SIN. I can't blame Adam for what I'm doing now!! All the more reason to praise God, that He saved me even though I just naturally am sinful and not worthy of his mercy and love. All the more reason to live the way He intends us to live.

I hope you buy this book, keep your mind and heart open to God, and get a vision of what community can be.

In addition, I would highly recommend "Connecting" and "Shattered Dreams" by Larry Crabb.

5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Vision of Christian Relationships   March 12, 2006
5 out of 5 found this review helpful

I just finished the book. It has stirred my heart. Larry Crabb has always been able to do that with me. I have read Finding God, Inside Out, and Connecting - all of which are excellent. But, this book, perhaps as the culmination of the previous, has offered a picture of what spiritual community, spiritual relationships could be. I found it riveting.

Larry has incredible perception into the human heart and that is the center of spiritual community. In this book, Crabb deals with what he calls the lower room and the Upper Room - what Paul would call the flesh and our new identity in Christ in Romans. Crabb goes on to share stories and principles of how we live and try to rearrange our lives in the lower room, which only increases our infatuation with the lower room. He sees that our job in spiritual community is to move from the lower room to the Upper Room - where we begin to see in clear view God's redemptive work in our life.

He also has an interesting section on managing our spiritual lives versus becoming mystics that I found absolutely engaging.

This book found me craving something, and trying to satisfy that craving in all the wrong places (mainly the lower room). And as Crabb put it, I felt like the solution was to rearrange the furniture in that room hoping to cure my problems. Instead, this book invited me to a place I hoped existed...not that going there eliminates the problems.

If you are searching for a compelling way to live your life in pursuit of Christ, and in the context of human relationships - then I highly recommend this book.

May it bring rest, reward, hunger, and a vision of what God could do in your life - as it has for me.
