Product Description A series of 8 lectures, given in Ojai, California in 1955, from one of the 20th centurys greatest philosophers and teachers. Krishnamurti confronts the typical grasping and confused mind which lies at the root of all violence and suffering. Though offered over fifty years ago, the ideas in these talks are fresh, relevant and offer an enduring message for today as Krishnamurti discusses a world in which booming productivity and scientific advancement should promise a happy future, but dont. He points also to the ongoing escalation of war, competition, envy and territoriality despite gains in education, religious ecumenism and the technologies of self-improvement. He asks his listeners to consider that all apparent progress is simply another illusion. In their brilliantly clear essays, his focus is singular, with no glib answers to eternal questions. To read this book is to venture into the unexplored assumptions that govern our lives. The workings of the mind are so simple and obvious in J. Krishnamurtis explanations, yet so enormously challenging to confront. Like other classic texts, such as religious scriptures, the words ring true. Issues addressed include: the nature of violence; the problem of change; the conditioning of the mind; how to achieve "peace"; the nature of worship and spiritual practice; how to really listen.

If there is only one Krishnamurti book you read, this slim and clear collection of lectures should be it. It is astounding how deep yet clear Krishnamurti can be at his best.
Plenty of questions... June 25, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
...but you won't find answers. This guy is all about getting you live in the moment without conceptual thought. Not a ton of new ideas, but the format is interesting (transcribed lectures) so it's very conversational, and it's full of thought-provoking questions. Should be better known than he is.
Prepare to be jolted June 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book jolts you as it brutally exposes how we are all conditioned to be this or that in our lives and thereby losing out every precious moment - the NOW.
I got a scare, while going through the book, I became aware of myself labeling every situation and every person as this or that and I want to be this, now and that-the next moment and so on. How the conditioning rules the mind is amazing and how this conditioning lends itself to anxiety and stress.
The funny part is how we label certain emotions as this or that and instead of seeing them as they are in their pristine form. We are busy, trying to get rid of those emotions or thoughts about those emotions (which I find even more ridiculous) which are only labels !! See the fears and anxieties and obsessions as they are and the very seeing brings about a huge change. I am certainly ending my quest for spiritual experiences after reading these set of talks as I am convinced that they are only another form of entertainment that the mind is seeking.
As I conclude this, my mind says - are you sure, you'll be peaceful just by observing the feelings and emotions ? All I can do is laugh at it without answering the question. Afterall, who is the one who asks the question and who is the one who seeks an answer and who is the one who might answer ? Its all the same - the ego - the conditioning - the mechanical mind whcih can operate only in the field of known - as Krishnamurti often says.
Amazing book !! In a nutshell, life as we know is not to be taken too seriously !!
Understanding yourself October 21, 2007 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
There are things that goes on in a person's life and they ask why is this happening or why does this always happen to me? This book brings the answer out but you have to see it for yourself. Why can't some women or men get a nice companion, job, money, or just a peaceful life? The mind has been condition from birth and attracts the same situations and conditions in which it has been brought up or presently in, weather religion, race, culture, etc. J.K. gets to the subconscious of the matter. This sort of thing affects your life, health, relationships all walks of life. How can you understand your children, spouse, friends, job etc. when you have issues and don't even understand yourself. J.K.'s book ask you to start being aware and you can get rid of this crap, excuse me conditions of the mind especially the harmful ones. Great book. Check it our for yourself. It has helped me.
