Product Description
A woman burdened by war...A doctor torn between passion and duty...A sweeping tale of love in the face of dishonor from the incomparable storyteller--Kathleen Woodiwiss.

Alaina MacGaren is forced to flee the devastation of her homeland in the guise of a young boy, only to find sanctuary in the arms of an enemy. Cole Latimer is a dashing Yankee surgeon who has served the Union faithfully, and his tender heart compels him to help a ragged, innocent "lad" in need--never suspecting the rags conceal a bewitching belle suspected of being a rebel spy.

But Alaina's masquerade does not fool Cole for long. And the strength, courage, and breathtaking sensuality of this woman whom it would be treasonous to love sets duty and desire at war within him. Yet Destiny has joined them for good or ill--and they both must follow where their hearts would lead them, if they are to build a glorious new life together out of the ashes of the old.

2 out of 5 stars Why would anybody enjoy this book?   August 15, 2008
I have read several of this author's books and generally liked or loved them. But this book was a terrible disappointment. The beginning was very slow, Alaina was extremely antagonistic throughout the book with no let up, Cole was a dissappointment when he was more than willing to have an affair, even if he was tricked into his marriage with Roberta; usually one wants a hero who is honorable. There is also the fact that one could almost interpret Cole's actions as rape the first time he's with Alaina. There were only negative characters surrounding Alaina, with the exception of Mrs. Hawthorne and Doctor Brooks that makes the situation seem very dismall. Roberta and Cole bicker constantly which tend to grate on one's neves. Plus it focuses so much on the suffering of Alaina that it just seems piled on and depressing. Also it focus so much on details of the civil war that aren't pertinent to the storyline and I found myself skimming paragraphs that basically said this general went here and fought this battle against this leader and lost and so on and so forth. Overall I'd say don't bother reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Out Of The Ashes Of The Old A Timeless Love Blooms...   July 3, 2008

KEW has written yet another epic love story to fill my days in awe.
Set in the civil war era where North is against South ,Union is against Confederate , and a young "lad" is against a Yankee "sawbones",makes a perfect read for anyone.
The witty comic exchanges between Dr. Cole Latimer and a dirty orphan boy simply named "Al" was a relief among the war torn devastation of the civil war. They were enemies because of where they lived on the map, not because of what the other did to the other.
Fate seemed to play a role in this romantic love story between Alaina and Cole. Deception pried them apart and love brought them together

Ashes in the Wind is a long book put into two parts part one was entertaining and filled with history, a relative villain and many disguises and good humor , part two was way to long but filled with tension, bitterness ,self destruction and yet another evil villain makes for a great read It all comes to a boiling point explosion of love that leaves you breathless. You don't want to put the book down which is a problem if you have stuff to do
This book will be added to my list of Favorites and I'll enjoy reading it again and again

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story   March 25, 2008

This is the first Woodiwiss book that I have read and I was blown away by how great it was. The use of the characters and language make this book an absolute treasure! I had a hard time putting the book down when there was something else that needed to be done. I have definitely become a fan and can't wait to read the next one.

Author Woodiwiss unravels a thrilling tale of romance, set against the backdrop of the war-torn South in 1863. With a strong-willed Confederate heroine who goes undercover as a boy, and ends up working for a handsome Yankee surgeon, sparks are sure to fly. She uses her setting to its fullest, letting her characters come together and be torn apart over and over during the novel's 565 pages. For another sprawling romantic saga with a fiery title, try Egrets to the Flames by Barbara Anton.
