Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Psychology is often considered to be a science. However, it is unique among the sciences as it is not governed by a single set of principles or beliefs. Instead, psychologists can draw upon a range of alternative approaches, each of which views the person and the study of the person in very different ways. Theoretical Perspectives in Psychology introduces and outlines the six main approaches and considers how each has helped psychologists understand human behavior, thought and feeling.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview   August 2, 2008
This book is among the very best overviews I've seen of the main theoretical perspectives in Western psychology. Key strengths of the book are:

- The book is fairly short, so the author is concise; he gets right to the point and stays on point.

- Care has been taken to select topics which are interesting and useful.

- Key concepts are explained well. The writing is clear and unpretentious. This is a book which is clearly intended to teach, rather than impress.

- The book is very well organized, with all sorts of features to aid in understanding and remembering the content. The publisher has evidently given considerable thought in designing this "Modular Psychology Series."

The only "negative" is that, because the book is fairly short, much could not be included (eg, Jung's ideas aren't discussed in the psychodyamic theory chapter). However, as noted above, the shortness of the book is also a virtue because it allows both the author and reader to cut to the chase.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and benefitted from it, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Western psychology. It's definitely a cut above most introductory books on this topic.
