The title of this book alone is inspiration enough to get our own creative juices flowing, from the author/creative artist/workshop facilitator/coach who has done so much to encourage and nurture the artist in all of us. SARK's magic reaches into the secret place that yearns to share our stories with others. She guides us along the path to the fulfillment of our own dreams. Invited and Welcomed into the Loving World of SARK August 19, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The journey of a writer needs and benefits from this book of SARK's...haha...at least MY journey does. SARK's unique and colorful pages reflect and remind that she courageously did it "her way" and she's been inspiring and delighting readers, artists and writers AND HUMANS for many years with sharing her dark corners and bright joy as she learns. With this book, she oh-so generously and gently invites and welcomes me to ponder, to practice, to tweak and to try. She reminds me that my writing is first of all for me. This is a highly practical learning book with rich resources, tools for your chest and en-couragement for your spirit. Thank you, dear SARK, for being here.
A Valuable Tool August 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
SARK's "Juicy Pens, Thirsty Paper" is an engaging and delightful read. When I first picked it up, I had a hard time putting it down until I had finished it. As well as being visually appealing and infused with playful humor, this book bursts with practical and simple exercises for the writer in overcoming creative blockages. Particularly inspiring are the portraits of other writers who share their insights on the creative process. Finally, the lists of writing resources at the end are worth the price of the book alone. "Juicy Pens, Thirsty Paper" will easily become a valuable tool for any new or veteran writer. I highly recommend it.

After fourteen grand, inspiring books, our delightful SARK has crafted a rich, full, remarkable book on writing. This is not your typical how-to-write-a-book book. She does share scores of insights and practical tips for writing, getting published, and the all-important finding your own "voice." But like all of SARK's work (books, articles, interviews, appearances, and seminars) she gives more than we could ever expect. There are the always-welcome SARK-prises of unexpected treats and secrets. One of the surprises is how much sound, practical, advice she delivers from nearly two decades as a nationally (and internationally) recognized, best selling author/illustrator/teacher.
There is also another splendidly inspiring SARK BOOK "hidden" inside this endlessly helpful writers manual. Whether you are a published author, experienced and busy writer, or someone who has a good personal story to tell, you will find lots of sparks, prompts, pokes, tips, teasers, and tidb...more After fourteen grand, inspiring books, our delightful SARK has crafted a rich, full, remarkable book on writing. To all my speaker friends, THIS is a great resource to assist you in crafting talks, keynotes, and sermons that are not just good, but MEMORABLE.
I am on my second read-through, having been privileged of seeing much of my friend Susan's (Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy) new book during the manuscript phase. This time, though, I am reading it for me, McNair the writer. So, I am taking my time and making more than a few marginal notes, doodles, and highlights. (In a SARK book, highlighting is almost redundant...but I doodle on anyway.)
"Hey, buddy! If the author (SARK) is your friend, how can you be objective?"
Good question. I can speak--better than most-- to the authenticity of he life bieng true to what she writes in her books. Don't let all the colors and illustration, and hand printing (all done by the author) fool you. M Being her friend doesn't make me blind or less critical of her work. On the contrary, it gives me a unique perspective on her process and the authenticity of her life behind her work. I do not dote or merely write light and breezy praise. If my reviews don't stand up to the test of authenticity, if her books are not all that I write that they are, anyone is free to write a contrary opinion. Many have.
With her latest--JUICY PENS, THIRSTY PAPER--I am especially enthused as I am a published author. I was so before and after meeting her. As such I find this book enormously helpful to me a as a writer...and will recommend it to others at the many arts and writers conferences where I speak throughout the year.
Indeed, I have scores of fiends who are published authors. I do not read everyone of their books and of the ones I do read, I post reviews of only the ones I want to encourage others to read. This is true of ALL books I read. I do not have time to post negative reviews, even when I read something that is VERY popular and I do not like it. I use my review-scribbling time (books, film, theatre, events, wine, etc.) to point folks toward the "good stuff."
This newest book from SARK is all that and a glass of full-bodied red wine!
With an emphasis of practical 'how to' exercises August 14, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy is a personal growth teacher, an artist, an inspiration speaker, a bestselling author, and under the pen name SARK has written and compiled "Juicy Pens, Thirsty Paper: Gifting The World With Your Words And Stories And Creating The Time And Energy To Actually Do It", a compendium of creative games and techniques that aspiring writers will find to be invaluable in the practice of their chosen craft. There are any number of excellent 'how to' books on how to write better, more effectively, and even more profitably. The unique focus of "Juicy Pens, Thirsty Paper" is an emphasis of practical 'how to' exercises to generate ideas, become inspired by people and things, make time to write within the context of a busy schedule, deal with writer's block and 'bad writing blues', -- even tips on getting published. Enhanced with personal anecdotes, uplifting quotes, interviews with artists, and more, "Juicy Pens, Thirsty Paper" is a welcome and recommended read for all novice authors and holds a great deal of benefit for experienced writers as well.
