 Must reading about Syria March 3, 2008

Professor Rubin's book does for Syria what John Gunther did many years for USSR. Shorn of topical references, this is an "Inside Assad's Syria" and can give many people insights into what the regime is about, how it works and what it is like. It is, if you will, a "user's guide."
That doesn't mean that every prognostication or evaluation in the book is precisely right, but it does mean you will come away with the understanding that a regime such as Syria is very different from the sort of political reality that you might know as a person living in a free society with post modern industrial values.
I would have liked to see more history and detail about the workings of the regime and relation to Hezbollah and Iran, suppression of dissidents and prospects for political change, and less dwelling on prognostications that are apt to be mistaken in the nature of things, but this is still a must-read book.
When you come to a place like Syria or want to understand such a regime, everyone must understand "You are not in Kansas Dorothy" - words don't have the same meaning, concepts like democracy don't mean the same thing either.

good book on syria. lots of historical information. gets a little repetitive towards the end. the writer has a little bit of sarcastic irony in his writing which i like.

Reading this book as an Israeli, living next door to syria here in Israel, has made me feel there is no chance of real peace with syria (as long as the assad family and their regime are in power).
The arabs & persians deserve better for themselves and their children than the evil regimes currently in power in syria and iran.

I was shocked that anyone who read this book would give it a positive review. I am very knowledgeable about Middle East politics and history and can tell you that there is almost nothing in "The Truth About Syria" that is truthful; it's funny that the word "truth" is even in the title. The author, Barry Rubin, has an obvious political agenda and instead of telling it like it is, he inserts his opinion and uses unreliable sources to fill the pages of this book. I won't even get into what is false about the book, it's easier to just say that 95% of the book is lies and misinformation. It just goes to show you that anything can be published these days.

I have never read any books for Mr. Rubin before this one and I don't know anything about his credibility, but while reading this book I was shocked about the quantity of untruth and mistakes in history about this country. what scared me most is that people who don't know about the subject may believe it and think that this book is a "fact".
I'm not a good writer and I don't know how to write a good review, but I'm waiting for the specialists in this subject to review this book and let you know the "truth" about this book.
Anyway, after reading this book I put it in the only place worthy of a book like this one.. the garbage.
