Editorial Reviews:

Book Description
This iconoclastic study was one of the most widely debated books of 2000. Finkelstein indicts with both vigor and honesty those who exploit the tragedy of the Holocaust for their own personal political and financial gain. In a devastating new postscript to this best-selling book, Norman G. Finkelstein documents the Holocaust industry's scandalous cover-up of the blackmail of Swiss banks, and in a new appendix demolishes an influential apologia for the Holocaust industry.

In an iconoclastic and controversial new study, Norman G. Finkelstein moves from an interrogation of the place the Holocaust has come to occupy in American culture to a disturbing examination of recent Holocaust compensation agreements. It was not until the Arab-Israeli War of 1967, when Israel's evident strength brought it into line with US foreign policy, that memory of the Holocaust began to acquire the exceptional prominence it enjoys today. Leaders of America's Jewish community were delighted that Israel was now deemed a major strategic asset and, Finkelstein contends, exploited the Holocaust to enhance this newfound status. Their subsequent interpretations of the tragedy are often at variance with actual historical events and are employed to deflect any criticism of Israel and its supporters. Recalling Holocaust fraudsters such as Jerzy Kosinski and Binjamin Wilkomirski, as well as the demagogic constructions of writers like Daniel Goldhagen, Finkelstein contends that the main danger posed to the memory of Nazism's victims comes not from the distortions of Holocaust deniers but from prominent, self-proclaimed guardians of Holocaust memory. Drawing on a wealth of untapped sources, he exposes the double shakedown of European countries as well as legitimate Jewish claimants, and concludes that the Holocaust industry has become an outright extortion racket. Thoroughly researched and closely argued, The Holocaust Industry is all the more disturbing and powerful because the issues it deals with are so rarely discussed.

4 out of 5 stars The Holocaust industry has gone beserk   August 6, 2008

"The Holocaust industry has always been bankrupt. What remains is to openly declare it so." (Finklestein, 2003, p. 150) This is a courageous book and requires a person to read it with an open mind. Finklestein desires his readers to know the truth behind the current "crass" financial exploitation by certain Jewish organizations in the name of "Holocaust memory". He spares no details of the legal processes and greedy monetary objectives behind "The Holocaust Industry." While there are no gory stories of dismembered bodies, the book left me feeling ill at what humanity does to humanity. Finklestein substantiates all of his claims and names names. It was a real eye opener for me. I knew there was some foul play, but I didn't realize the level of government involvement, particularly the US complicity at high levels.

The book is written with incredible factual detail. Finklestein has a wry sense of humor that lightens his otherwise intense writing style. One example of his humor is his suggestion that the Germans "build a national museum in Berlin to commemorate not the Nazi genocide but American slavery or the extermination of the Native Americans," as a counterpoint to the "federally mandated and funded Holocaust museum in [Washington, D.C.](p. 72).

The book for me is summarizd by the following sentences: "As the Holocaust industry plays with numbers to boost its compensation claims, anti-Semites gleefully mock the "Jew liars" who even "huckster" their dead. In juggling these numbers the Holocaust industry, however unintentially, whitewashes Nazism." (p. 127)

My father was a Holocaust Survivor and I know no amount of money could replace what he lost, no memorial or education could describe what happened. "You had to have been there to understand." I bought the book because I believe Finklestein when he says he wants to properly honor the memory of his parents. I believe his book does this admirably and is a proud memorial to their legacy. Alles ist vorbei. Definately recommended reading.

5 out of 5 stars HORRIFIC JEWISH COMMITTED ATROCITIES CONTINUING TO BE REVEALED... BY A COURAGEOUS JEWISH SCHOLAR & HUMANIST   May 26, 2008

You will read this book in one sitting, save getting upset/sick, and regrouping to continue. Finkelsein is a true hero - in his objective and truthful writings. Painstakingly researched with great footnotes - WHEW!!!From the bible: "You shall reap, what you sew." Finkelstein would be a strong contendor, in terms of, writing the definitive "PALESTINIAN HOLOCAUST." Rachel Corrie(great book!), murdered by the Israelis, would certainly be included in the atrocities. May poor young rachel corrie rest in peace. Mr. Finkelsstein, thank you for having a heart and conscience and making the world aware of this horrific, ongoing, genocide.

1 out of 5 stars Disturbing Anti -Semitism From A Self Hating Jew   April 15, 2008

Once again anti semitism is on the rise, this is nothing new, gods "Chosen Few" have been persecuted consistantly throughout history and there are so many to blame, so many evil, hate filled anti semites who choose to prey on the innocents. A comedian whos name escapes me made the joke of Elizabeth Taylor stating that after the 6th divorce, wouldnt you turn around and ask yourself 'hey, maybe Im the problem'. Instead of pointing the finger at everyone else, perhaps Jews should realise that it is the behaviour and mindset of certain people within their race that is the root cause of the problem. Maybe ponder that thought for just a moment before they regress into the mantra of 'we are the victims & all who say otherwise are anti semites, haters & bigots'. Do you actually think writers such as Finkelstein or David Duke are the real problem? If your going to always look at your race as a collective then maybe you should adopt an objective view of yourselves...and for christs sake stop yelling anti-semite every ten seconds, havent you read the boy who cried wolf. Oh, the book, yeah its worth a look...I recommend you couple it with Curb Your Enthusiasm...Season One. Larrys the man!

5 out of 5 stars norman finkelstein- academic martyr   March 31, 2008

brilliant work by norman. to bad that because of his outspoken critique of israel he has suffered what no academic scholar living in the united states should suffer as he was denied tenure at depaul university even though the department of political science recommended him unanimously, as depaul decided to trade "truth" for "peace". for me norman finkelstein will go down as one of the most prolific scholars on the middle east conflict and if you like noam chomsky, you will enjoy this book as i always described norman finkelstein as a noam chomsky that makes sense.I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   October 2, 2007

I have nothing but the greatest admiration for someone who holds truth at such high esteem that he / she is willing to pour all of their mind and soul into uncovering it, and subsequently risk everything attributable to them in our physical world, proclaiming it for the benefit of his / her fellow man. Professor Finkelstein does this in the most objective and proficient way. The Holocaust Industry is a wonderfully insightful book on this very important topic. I think the fact that its critics only dismiss without substantiation speaks volumes...
