Product Description The Black Panther Party represents Black Panther Party members' coordinated responses over the last four decades to the failure of city, state, and federal bureaucrats to address the basic needs of their respective communities. The Party pioneered free social service programs that are now in the mainstream of American life. The Party's Sickle Cell Anemia Research Foundation, operated with Oakland's Children's Hospital, was among the nation's first such testing programs. Its Free Breakfast Program served as a model for national programs. Other initiatives included free clinics, grocery giveaways, school and education programs, senior programs, and legal aid programs. Published here for the first time in book form, The Black Panther Party makes the case that the programs' methods are viable models for addressing the persistent, basic social injustices and economic problems of today's American cities and suburbs.

AMAZING READ!!! September 17, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Amazing Read!! It's incredible to read the thoughts behind the community programs that the Panther's used across the nation. The Panthers are one of the most amazing social movements in U.S. history and these community programs were there base. An incredible book.
Psuedo Scholarship; Obama's Comrades August 30, 2008 0 out of 8 found this review helpful
The late U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan popularized the principle that, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinions, but not to his own facts". It is a fact that the Black Panther Party was a terrorists organization like Al-Queida and Hamas. Its members (especially Huey P. Newton) were terrorists like Bin Laden and the 9/11 hijackers. This book is pseudo-scholarship. It is an attempt to use words to cover-up and sanitize atrocities. West cannot change those facts by making false and misleading representations of fact.
Also, it is interesting that Hilliard and West support Barack Obama because their Marxist philosophy is congruent with Obama's Marxist philosophy. Their philosophy can be summarized by the Marxist slogan, "From each according to his ability; to each according to his need". The nexus between Newton and Obama is confirmed by a statement that Hilliard made on C-SPAN's Book TV on August 30, 2008. Hilliard said that "Huey was our Jesus"! Similarly, Obama's disciples claim that he is their "messiah"! This cult of personality is why Barack is more like Newton, Hilliard and West than he is like main stream Americans. Barack is not of, by and for the American people.
Independent voters: don't buy this book, wake up to the threat of Barack Obama and reject his jive Marxist philosophy.
