Product Description
This book/eBook package is your guide to getting more interesting and creative photos with the 12.3 megapixel Nikon D300 digital SLR. It discusses every camera setting on this high-quality and very complex camera in a clear, well-illustrated style, with many integrated tips and QuickSteps, but it also does much more. You'll also learn the concepts of photography as you learn why and when you use specific settings, not just how to set them. You'll find that this guide helps you quickly master your camera so you ll be getting the kinds of photos you hope for.

The book is printed in black & white and has a well-liked spiral binding that lets the book lie flat or be folded back. The accompanying eBook on a CD disc is a printable and searchable full-color version of the same book in Adobe's popular PDF format. It can be printed out in whole or part and read on a PC or Mac using the free Acrobat Reader or any current Web browser. This eBook also includes clickable links to 50 or so interactive animations that illustrate the core concepts of digital photography such as exposure compensation, lens focal lengths, histograms, and much, much more. (To use these animations you do need an Internet connection.)

Chapter 1 Camera Controls and Creativity explains how to take pictures in fully automatic point and shoot mode and how your camera captures digital images. See how to play back and manage your images; use buttons, dials, and menus; control image size and quality and select shutter release modes.

Chapter 2 Controlling Exposure explains how to use all of the camera s exposure modes and exposure controls to get photos that show the scene exactly as it is, or as you want to interpret it. Learn how to display and evaluate histograms and use the high quality RAW image format.

Chapter 3 Controlling Sharpness discusses how to control sharpness in your photographs and how to creatively use focus, depth-of-field, sharpness, softness, and blur creatively.

Chapter 4 Capturing Light & Color introduces light and color and how to use them creatively. Understand how they change throughout the day and seasons, how they re affected by the weather, and how light s direction and quality affects highlights and shadows. See how to set your camera s white balance to capture colors the way you see them.

Chapter 5 Understanding Lenses explains how to use your lenses and lens accessories creatively when photographing scenery, interiors, and people. See how wide-angle, normal, telephoto, and close-up lenses affect your images.

Chapter 6 Using Flash and Studio Lighting discusses how to creatively use your camera s built-in or external flash, indoors and out, and in good light and bad. Explore special techniques such as fill and slow sync flash. Learn about controlling flash exposures using flash lock and flash compensation. Learn how to use tabletop and studio lighting to get great product shots and portraits with simple setups.

Chapter 7. Other Features and Commands explains how to use live view and picture controls; retouch images; use active d-lighting; create multiple exposures; use the interval timer; bracket exposure, flash, and white balance; use My Menu and the setup, custom settings and playback menus. Finally learn about caring for your camera and cleaning its image sensor.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Course   June 23, 2008
I found that this course book was excellent for helping me learn not only about how to use my Nikon D300 but also good at covering basic photography information as well. This is not just another course on what the D300 features are but also how and when to use those features. I felt that the writing style was very clear (not too technical) and did specially well at explaining more complicated subjects like exposure, histograms, lighting (white balance) and flash.

The illustrations were well done and clear to show parts of the camera and complicated topics as well.

Having the book in PDF format with hyperlinks was also a hugh plus. I was able to read the course on a plane during long flights without having to carry the bound version with me on the plane (I had to carry my laptop on with me anyway).

The book was damaged when it arrived, reured the book and was refunded my money.

1 out of 5 stars poor   June 2, 2008
complicated. The Cd does not work. Quality is so poor that it peels off within your computer creating problems to retreive the debrie

3 out of 5 stars Short Course vs Nikon users manual?   June 1, 2008
This useful course is designed to assist relatively new users of Nikon DSLRS of this calibre (pro level).
It almost succeeeds. On the positive side it sets out each section clearly and concisely and is backed up by the Ebook disc with animated practical exercises.
The negatives? - The book tends to gloss over some operational areas with the D300 or offers only scant reference to them.
It is not a high quality production for the price charged (not much better than a photocopied edition) and could have been so much better with the addition of colour. (you can produce a colour edition yourself by printing from the disc provided).
Overall though, the book works quite well and certainly demystifies some of the confusing data written in Nikon's D300 users manual

This is a "cookie cutter" copy of the book I purchased for my Nikon D80. All the author did was update the information from one camera to the other. Very dissapointing, not to mention overpriced. The features of the D300 were not covered very throughly and a lot were left out completely. A much, much better book is David Busch's "Nikon D300 Guide to Digital SLR Photography" and is also less expensive.
