Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
It is the first book ever devoted to the photographs of outstanding war reporter SS P. K. Roth. Although he died in March 1943, Roth left more than 120 rolls of film that give historians and history lovers a precious account of the war.

This album contains pictures Franz (Seranhicus) Roth (1911-1943) took of the "Leibstandarte", especially in the Balkans at the beginning of 1941, during the "Barbarossa" operation, the Russian campaign in 1941-1942, and in France in 1942, before the transfer to the front near Kharkov. The book is a photo album with bilingual captions.

The album contains more than 600 photographs from contact sheets kept by the U.S. NATIONAL ARCHIVES in WASHINGTON D.C. Some of Roth's reports have been reproduced almost in full, which gives them a cinematic sense of continuity.

4 out of 5 stars "One mans personal view of War"   June 25, 2008

This book published by Heimdal gives us a rare insight into the works of one of the Leibstandarte's more well known war correspondents, Franz Roth.
Assigned to the 7th section of the SS Kriegsberichter Kompanie he follows the trials and tribulations of the Leibstandarte from March 1941 till his death near Kharkhov in March 1943.
His works which have been faithfully reproduced from small contact sheets which were kept in the American National Archives, have been photographed for this publication. The book intended as a photo album has a large number of small and full page photographs some of which I have not seen before.
Roth was responsible for some of the more famous shots of leibstandarte personalities in the early part of the war,and the book is packed with numerous photos of the men and machines at war and rest, and brings to the reader a sense of "you are there".
Pictured also are the results of war, the prisoners, the suffering, the dead and wrecked enemy war machines whch feature prominently throughout the book. These are the sort of shots which Nazi propagandists wanted to show their public and are the real reason for his photos.
His work in chronological order follows the leibstandarte on campaign, begining with the Balkans,to the first battles in Russia, its refitting in France and finishes with a few photos from the Dieppe battle.
Printed on fine glossy paper for excellent photo reproduction and a little over 190 pages, the book is a quick and very easy read, with the photos having both French and English captions.
But this book in the vein of RZM's series "Waffen SS Kursk 1943" and "Platz der Leibstandarte" or Nation Europa Verlag's, "Die Leibstandarte im Bild" and "Wenn Alle Bruder Schweigen" falls a little short of the aforementioned titles.
I found some of the photos lacking in quality reproduction and hard to look at particulary some of the smaller photos with them not as good as RZM's.
However all in all this a good book and is well worth having on the bookcase, if you collect the history of the leibstandarte this is a must have.
