Product Description A world-renowned photographer and author of Abrams' best-selling Earth From Above series, Yann Arthus-Bertrand has given us a new perspective on our world. In this fascinating book he takes us on yet another visual journey, into the life of a photographer. Tracing the highlights of his career, he invites us behind the scenes as he captures the primal lure of lions, hyenas, wildebeest, and stags in the wilds of Africa; studies the colorful traditions of the Masai in Kenya; and creates portraits of people with their pets or farm animals closer to home. Arthus-Bertrand's aerial photography, the work that has won him the greatest acclaim, is presented in extraordinary images of everything from the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to the sands of the Sahara.
In Sophie Troubac's biographical text, Arthus-Bertrand discusses how and why he became a photographer and describes his passionate involvement with his craft. This captivating overview of a prolific and versatile photographer, which is complemented by an accompanying DVD on his life and work, is sure to be of interest to both professionals and amateurs in the field. AUTHOR BIO: Yann Arthus-Bertrand's photographs have been featured in National Geographic, Life, GEO, and Paris-Match, among other magazines. He has published more than 20 books of photography, including Abrams' best-selling Earth From Above series and Good Breeding. Yann Arthus-Bertrand: Being a Photographer April 22, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the third copy of this book I have ordered (and paid for). The first two were from bordeebook and were shopworn and the first was missing the DVD. This was never made good by bordeebook. The third book took over a month to receive from Vana but it was the USPS' fault, not the vendor's. The third book from Vana is in excellent condition but the DVD is faulty, as was the DVD in the second book from bordeebook. In the future, I will not order from Amazon's vendors. The book is beautiful - the photography is spectacular.
Best "behind the scenes" photog book ever January 16, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This has got to be the best "behind the scenes" or "How I got started" photography book ever. His story is an interesting one, and the photographs are wonderful. There's not very much here on "how to take a picture", other than how to lead a life that puts you in interesting situations. Even though there's no "photo technique" covered in the book, lots of the pictures are wide enough so you get a sense of what it was like to be on the set or in the field with him.
After I had read most of the book, I found that the DVD was essentially an hour-plus worth of the same material, but with video instead of stills. The book alone and the DVD alone are each worth the Amazon cost. Getting both of them is wonderful.
The DVD documentary alone is worth the price of admission August 17, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a great book + DVD-documentary combination! The DVD is in a sleeve glued to the inside of the back of the book.
The author of the book, most famous for his series of "Earth from Above" photo books, chronicles his life and career in photography, from his early days following a pride of lions to his star-photographer status for his outdoors exhibit of "Earth from Above". A very interesting and inspiring book+documentary, highly recommended to anyone interested in photography and photojournalism or the study of the human experience...
Incredible Retrospective October 27, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Any photographer lucky enough to have a retrospective of their life's work created with the quality put into this book and accompanying DVD would have to be happy. This is a wonderful volume of extraordinary photographs and excellent text. Being a Photographer traces the life and photographs of Yann Arthus-Bertrand, a French photographer who spent years in Africa as a young man. It was from there that he first started photographing the Earth from above as he gave hot air balloon rides to tourists. Yawn spent more years photographing major sporting events, travel destinations, and other projects before returning to aerial photography to produce his famous book Earth from Above. The superbly printed photographs in this book cover a lifetime of great work and are supplemented with biographical text by Sophie Troubac. The accompanying DVD makes it a great combination and inspirational book for anyone interested in photography.
