Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Because participants in our workshop series, Instruction for All Students, often ask, "Why didn't we learn this in college?" that question provided the inspiration for the title of this new book for teachers new to the classroom. This title is in no way meant to condemn those who direct our collegiate experiences. The realities are that we may well have studied these topics and earned a good grade on a test over the theoretical aspects of this information but had no classroom teaching experiences on which to hook the information, that we took an alternative approach to entering the profession, that our focus was elsewhere at the time or perhaps, in fact, it was not taught. Whatever the case may be, teachers new to the classroom clearly need support and a repertoire of effective teaching strategies during their first years of classroom work.

Why Didnt I Learn This in College? is based on the constructs that:

+ the best management program is a good instructional program,

+ if the end we have in mind is student learning, we do not want to concentrate on control and compliance but rather on building learning centered environments, and

+ we need efficient and effective organizational systems for ourselves, our students, and our classroom.

5 out of 5 stars What every teacher needs!   September 11, 2008
Our school district purchased this book for every new teacher hired this year, experienced or not. It is a gold mine of ideas and solid instructional practices. We used the book as the text for our induction program this summer and the trainers teaching it actually talked about how they learned so much as well. Some of them have been teaching for 20 years! Paula has taken all things great about organizing your classroom, standards-based teaching, and instruction and placed it all in one book that is easy to use and practical. I highly recommend every teacher get a copy of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Save your Money   January 9, 2008

I received this book from my school district as a new teacher, and I was fairly disappointed by the lack of substance. It seems like a potpourri of random ideas the author compiled over time. Many of the ideas are valid, but there isn't much novelty in the book.

2 out of 5 stars Graphic to cover up a lack of substance   November 28, 2007

My school district distributed this text and the mandatory inservice training to all teachers new to the county. At first glance, the book appears helpful, but upon closer inspection it is a disappoinment. The text is set in large font and is graphically arranged to cover up a lack of substance. When the author actually pulls research into the discussion, it is superficial and not adequately explained. Although many of Rutherford's strategies are effective and applicable to various levels, the majority of the material presented in this book appear to be rehashed versions of what effective teachers - and anyone who has gone through a college ed program in the past ten years - already know and do. All in all, I DID learn this in college and I didn't need a beginner's ed book to tell me about it again.

2 out of 5 stars Very Basic   May 15, 2007

This book did not meet my expectations. The information is extremely basic and is a review of college education courses. Although this book would be helpful, it could very easily be replaced with college texts.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden Gem!   January 13, 2006

I happened to find this book while browsing the teaching section. It has truly been a great resource that every (new) teacher should have. Unlike most of our teacher ed. programs, this book gives practical information about how to run a classroom. You won't regret buying this book, it is a wonderful resource!
