Product Description Big Sur Inn: The Deetjen Legacy travels back in time to reveal the history, legends, and storied past of a California coastline institution. California's Big Sur has it all: majestic redwoods, waterfalls, and a rich literary and cultural tradition. As Sunset magazine notes: "If ever a place represented the freedom and beauty of California, this is it." Nestled on this magical stretch of Highway 1 is Deetjen's Big Sur Inn. Its distinctive vernacular architecture, which visitors and locals alike recognize as the most authentically preserved along the coast, serves a waiting list of guests year round. In 1990, the Department of Interior recognized Big Sur Inn by adding it to the National Register of Historic Places. Author Anita Alan traces the Inn's history from the poetic inspiration that compelled Helmuth Deetjen to journey from his native Norway, to the fulfillment of a lifelong dream-to make his home in the California redwoods.

Disappointing Deetjen May 7, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Big Sur Inn needed an historian and got one. The historian needed an editor and didn't. Some interesting stories and photos but the whole doesn't hang together. Buy it for the memories, especially if you have ever stayed at the Inn, but don't expect great writing.
A perfect hideaway March 12, 2007 This is a lovely exploration of a favorite getaway in Big Sur
A frozen moment in time February 8, 2007 In the late 50s, early 60s...I had the good fortune to stumble into this Simple Inn.... Poppa Deetjen and Ed quietly made all travelers welcome. It truly is one of those very unique places where time literally stands still. Nothing changes, if anything, it gets better, each time you visit. Anita Alan has captured the very essance of of ALL that the Inn is about, she has stimulated my senses so, that I can taste, feel and re-experience my past times.... Her writing will most definetly stimulate you into to visiting, an enjoying your own experience..I GAR-RON-TEE ! !
