Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Narrating the courting done by the protagonist, this is a charming tale. With a light-hearted atmosphere prevailing over the complete narration, the work captures the fancy of the reader with its romantic depiction of the events. With brilliantly drawn characters and a well-knitted plot, this is an amazing work. This EasyRead Edition has been optimized for readers with normal vision who prefer to enhance their reading pleasure.

I'm glad to hear it, sir, he answered, "very glad. It requires some explanation, however. Mrs. Rose has been congratulated, and has acknowledged the truth of the report. It is confirmed by many facts. The work-table you bought, confessing your intention of giving it to your future wife, is given to her. How do you account for these things, sir?"

3 out of 5 stars terrible proof reading   August 1, 2008

What a pity that this delightful little story is so badly printed. It is full of odd typographical errors that make me suspect that the process was indeed "untouched by human hands" or minds. We are glad to have been able to find this, but some human being should look over the text before it is sent out into the world.

5 out of 5 stars A Little Romantic Comedy...   July 27, 2008

Elizabeth Gaskell has in "Mr. Harrison's Confessions" created a small comedic masterpiece of mid-19th century England, very much in the mode of the "Cranford" stories. A young, single, and handsome doctor joins a medical practice in a rural English village, only to fall afoul of virtually every single female in town.

Mr. Harrison, having just completed his medical residency in London, takes up an offer from a Mr. Morgan to share the older man's medical practice in the small rural village of Duncombe. Mr. Harrison must acquire both a bedside manner and the particular customs of the village through trial and error. His friendly manner, coupled with the hijinks of a visiting friend, leave him inadvertantly engaged to three different women in the village while shunned by the one woman he does care for. Only a supreme medical crisis enables the young Mr. Harrison to begin to resurrect his fortunes.

Gaskell cleverly presents the story through the first person narration of Mr. Harrison. Through a series of misunderstandings and ill-fated good intentions, a building romantic crisis is probably visible to the reader long before it dawns on the unfortunate Mr. Harrison. The result is a mounting sense of comedic horror, which is neatly resolved by the final page of the story.

"Mr. Harrison's Confessions" was seamlessly folded into the Masterpiece Theater presentation of "Cranford" in the Spring of 2008. The original story is here told unabridged and very highly recommended as good entertainment to fans of Elizabeth Gaskell and her authentic and humorous portrayal of rural England.
