Product Description

The beautiful daughter of a prominent Michigan doctor, Narice has never strayed anywhere near the wrong side of the law. Then her father is brutally murdered -- and suddenly federal agents are swarming around her like flies, making accusations about a stolen North African diamond. But before they can interrogate her, she is wrested from their grasp at gunpoint by a shadowy figure -- and Narice Jordan is on the run.

But is this dark, good-looking stranger who calls himself Saint her kidnapper or her savior? Narice knows nothing about any missing gem, yet there are two things she knows for certain: Only at Saint's side can she find her way to her father's killers.

And she'll have to trust this dangerous, ruthless, and deadly mystery man ... if she wants to keep breathing.

5 out of 5 stars The Edge of Dawn   September 3, 2008
This book as well as the others that I have read of Beverly Jenkins are great. She intertwines all of her people the old and the new.I sit on my seat and just wait to see what will happen. The books are so great that I read them over and over again. We have a Book Club on the bus that we ride and we share the books and after everyone has read them,we have an open discussion about them.We have NEVER given any of Beverly's book a bad review.I love her historical ones and I wish that she would do a reprint of them so I can own them and add them to my collection.

1 out of 5 stars Huh? Saint Who?   August 4, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I am so annoyed. I just want to scream. The Saint in the Edge of Midnight doesn't jive with the Saint in the Edge of Dawn. Ms. Beverly insults my intelligence. I feel played y'all(sour face).

The Edge of Midnight introduces us Saint. Saint is an enigma. The book is based on his sister, who runs a community center, desperate need to secure 17,000 dollars. She has tried every avenue she can to secure the money. The local neighborhood kingpin has offered her a way out of her predicament. She has run out of options, and succumbs to partnering with a crook. The plan fails and this is how Sarita, his sister, meets her current husband, Mykal. Mykal is Saint's brother.

Remember this book is based on Sarita's desperate need for money. Now fast forward to the Edge of Dawn. Do you know that Saint had the nerve to show a woman he barely knows his bank statement from a Swiss account? He just wanted to prove he ain't no scrub. Do you know how much he had in his account - 1.6 million dollars.

Now according to the time line between Saint and Narice hooking up, Mykal and Sarita have been married for less than a year, and they married soon after they met. So I want to know how did Saint accumulate 1.6 million dollars in less than a year and why did not he help his beloved sister out with $17,000. This just don't make sense.

Ms. Beverly, respectful my sistah, I have not had a lobotomy since the last book. There is no consistency and it simply doesn't make sense to me. I expect for author's to be consistent and sense in their story telling.

There were some more discreet inconsistencies in this book, but the Saint having a million dollars simply slapped me mentally in the face. This is why I give this book a 1 star. I feel this is bad writing, unless in the introduction to she lets the readers know the changes in the character and his situation.

I also feel that Ms. Beverly has too many editing issues in her books. I love her stories, especially the historicals, but I gotta call her out on this one. Otherwise, I would give this book a solid 4 star. I highly recomment that this book be read. However, please the the two other books that come before this one and you'll see what I mean.

4 out of 5 stars starts with a bang   June 7, 2008

The Edge of Dawn starts off with a bang, as Narice Jordan is abducted, first by one group headed by a man named Ridley, then abducted from them by a man known as "Saint."

Narice is the wealthy owner & founder of an exclusive school. She's just buried her father, who died in a house fire--murdered.

Saint is Galen Anthony St. Martin, formerly military, now a troubleshooter for the government, among other clients. In this case, he's working directly for the president to recover the Eye of Sheba, to return it to the Queen of Nagal, to help assure her return to power.

Ridley & co. are also after the Eye, representing a rival faction in Nagal. The action starts on page 2, and never really lets up. Car chases, explosions, high-tech weapons and equipment, dramatic hand-to-hand combat--enough for a James Bond movie.

And there's also a nice puzzle aspect to the story--the clue her father left about the Eye was in the form of a slave quilt--the picture in each square having a meaning, telling them where to go and how to find it.

Narice is a wonderful heroine. She's smart--she tries to escape every chance she gets, but doesn't blunder into things. Despite an attraction to Saint, she doesn't trust him until he's proven himself trustworthy.

Saint... well, he's pretty hero-worthy. A nice alpha hero with a tortured past. He's also got two half-brothers, and I'm guessing that they have stories of their own, which I'll have to look up. I didn't feel lost, but it was apparent there were stories there that I'd missed.

Much of the story takes place in Michigan--mostly Detroit, but also Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, which I loved. It's not a common setting, and it made me a bit nostalgic. Saint & Narice also traveled to the Okefenokee swamp, which was very interesting.

My only problem with The Edge of Dawn was the backstory. The action got interrupted at times with explanations that really slowed things down, and didn't seem to be all that necessary. Interesting, yes, but not necessary. It's a fine line.

The Edge of Dawn was also a bit over-the-top, just shy of JamesBondishness, but that's okay with me--I liked that.

I'll definitely look up Saint's brothers' stories, and keep an eye out for Beverly Jenkins's other books.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly hits another one out of the park.   April 5, 2008
I love Beverly Jenkins' books and this one is no exception. The characters are so fun to be with. The mystery of the Eye and the handsome knight who saves the damsal and the damsal saves him right back is reminiscent of Beverly's frontier novels. I loved this story! If you like being on pins and needles you'll like it too.

5 out of 5 stars I felt like I was watching a movie   March 2, 2008
I was first intrigued with Saint in the books `Sexy/Dangerous' and `The edge of Midnight,' the light-skinned brother who always wore sunglasses and that army looking trench coat (which was VERY handy by the way), and who could disappear in a blink of an eye. I was so glad he got his own story. I was not disappointed. From the first three pages the book pulls you in and never stops. Saint is a man who knows what he is doing in and out of the bed. BJ's vivid description of him is so good I can picture him in my mind. Narice is no damsel and distress, she definitely held her own and held Saint at times. She was gangsta! She was perfect for Saint. I loved her and Saint together, they are like the modern day Bonnie and Clyde (lol). There was not a dull moment in this book. In BJ fashion she also included African-American history. I loved the idea of using a quilt for a map like runaway slaves did. That was very fascinating. The jammed pack action in this book was written very intensely, but did not take away from the romance. We also got to catch up with Myk and Sarita from `Midnight.' This is an Oscar worthy book.
