Product Description
England, 1815: Ian Rufford was captured, enslaved, and then abandoned in the lonely dunes of Egypt's desert. His tormentor was a woman of magnificent beauty...and the blackest of souls. Now, Ian prays for a death that will not come. Only after his rescue does he begin to realize how he has changed. But he understands very little. Just that he is carrying something strange in his blood known only as "The Companion."

Elizabeth Rochewell's home was Egypt. After her father's death, however, she is being sent home to live a conventional life in London. On board ship, she finds herself drawn to her mysterious traveling companion, Ian Rufford. He awakens feelings in her that disturb and tantalize her senses. But he hides a shocking secret that Beth can only begin to unravel.

Now, journey with two linked souls who are determined to stop one woman's evil quest. A journey that will take them to the heights of desire and the depths of depravity. THE COMPANION is an unforgettable, sensual, and erotic novel that take you places you've never gone before...and it will make you believe in the power of true love.

4 out of 5 stars Companion Series   July 25, 2008
I have really enjoyed The Companion Series by Susan Squiers! She is a very bold and vivid writer. I can't seem to put the books down once I am started and while I enjoy getting to and knowing how the story is ending I'm very disappointed that the journey is over.
Her version of "vampirism" is very well thought out and credible.

2 out of 5 stars An okay historical/vampire novel   September 16, 2007
Set in 1819, The Companion is the story of two unlikely people destined to find love. Elizabeth Rochewell is a beautiful girl who is socially outcasted by British society. On an expedition in Africa, her father is killed which forces her to return to England. While on her journey back home , she begins a fond friendship with Mr. Ian Rufford, a freed slave and former naval officer. Ian has suffered two years of torture at the hands of an evil spirited woman. Will Ian overcome his tortured past and find love with Miss Rochewell?

This is set in the historical society of England in 1819. The writer is very authentic concerning the language and descriptions of English fashion and sayings. The beginning the book is however a bit boring because you're trying to adjust. The second half is better as indicated when the writer has better transitions from scene to scene. I did not like that both characters, Rufford and Rochewell, kept playing the guessing and doubting game about their feelings for each other. A bit redundant in the following chapters after there landfall at England.

Ian's torture however is very similar to that of another vampire. For a better and more tantilizing story in more ways than one about vampire romance, I recommend the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. Lover Awakened is the story of the vampire Zsadist who held a fate similar to that of Ian Rufford.

Overall this book was decent and I did enjoy the lukewarm love scenes and sexual tension, but more so the vast display of words used only in a historical novel.

4 out of 5 stars The Companion (Regency Vampire Novels)   March 15, 2007
I enjoyed reading it, Ian Rufford and Elizabeth Rochewell are characters well defined and the book storyline was reeling in my head (helped by my imagination) like a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Vampire Regency!   January 8, 2007

I love vampire books and I love Regency historical novels but my only experience so far of these two genres combined was not a success. Still, I thought I'd give "The Companion" a go as it had so many positive reviews on Amazon. And I'm very glad I did!

"The Companion" is not your average novel in either genre. Within the vampire genre it is different as the main character, the vampire Ian Rufford, doesn't actually know that's what he is for ages and spends a lot of the book trying to get himself cured as well as trying suicide. He is a tortured hero - in both senses of the word; tortured physically before he became a vampire, tortured mentally by the understanding of the dark side of his nature. His story slowly unfolds through flashbacks as we learn how he became a vampire and why he fears them so much.

Within the Regency genre this book is different as very little of it is set in the drawing rooms of London - most of it takes place in Casablanca and the desert as Beth, our heroine, carries out her archaeological work. Beth is an unusual heroine - short, not particularly attractive, with an English father and an Egyptian mother (both now dead); a woman who doesn't fit into either world. Another portion of the book is set on a sailing boat returning to England where Ian and Beth meet - I loved reading the details about sailing 200 years ago.

What was particularly enjoyable about this book was its new take on an old theme - that of vampires, in this case vampirism being a parasite in the blood called "The Companion" - and how it might affect someone mentally to know that they now have to take other humans' blood for sustenance. Susan Squires' writing style is excellent, she is able to build interest and pace the novel well and we care about and understand the main characters. There is another book in this series, "The Hunger", and I have already ordered it and am very much looking forward to it. If that book is as good as this then I shall be a very happy reader!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't stop reading!   August 3, 2006
I started this book and couldn't put it down. This is a really fast-paced Regency Romance with intriguing characters and a fascinating plot full of surprising twists. Susan Squires gives an interesting interpretation of vampirism as a parasite that also benefits its carrier. I loved the heroine, Elizabeth, for her individuality, intelligence and bravery. Very passionate encounters with a tortured (in many ways) companion on a ship.
