Product Description Used to be my greatest achievement was holding a job more than three days. Now suddenly I can shoot fireballs, chill your drink or blow-dry your hair at fifty paces with a blink of my eye! It all started when this crazy scientist dropped something in my Grande Mocha Latte. Of course I got wicked sick. Next morning I'm waking up with this total hottie bending over me. He tells me 1) his name's Rome Masters, 2) he's a government agent and 3) I can control the four elements with a thought. He seems even less pleased by my (apparently irreversible) transformation than I am
. Because now he'll have to kill me.

Great First May 4, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
My paranormal romance book club chose this book as its first read. None of the members, including myself, had ever read anything by or had ever heard of Gena Showalter before. We chose this book based solely on a starred review read elsewhere. I have not met to discuss the book with the other members yet so I don't know how they felt about the book. But For me, the book proved to be a perfect first pick. It kind of reads like an X-Men novel for adult females. It moved along quickly but was easy to keep up with. It also has some gritty, but I felt appropriate, language. And of course, it being a romance novel it has sex scenes. However, they are very [very ;P] well written. And I certainly loved the writting style of the novel. All-n-all: I will definitely be reading more from Ms. Showalter and would recommend her to anyone who is looking for an easy summer read.
Better action than romance January 14, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I so wanted to love this book. I like both romance novels and comic books, so this seemed like a sure thing. It starts out strong. Our heroine, Belle Jamison, coffee wench, is funny, charming, self-deprecating, and spunky. The story - regular nice girl accidentally develops superpowers - is nothing new, but it's presented in a very engaging fashion. But then the hero appears, and herein lies my problem with the book.
We're told numerous times that Rome Masters is sexy, but it seems solely based on his clothes (he's wearing all black, after all) and the fact that he has a smoldering blue gaze. Oh, and he's dangerous. He also deliberately keeps things from Belle, ties her up, holds her prisoner for her own "safety," and is generally insensitive to her feelings. The story is told entirely in Belle's first-person perspective, and that doesn't help. The reasons behind most of Rome's actions are never all that clear and he subsequently comes off as a jerk. There's certainly no excuse for him to spring his gorgeous but nasty ex-wife and cloyingly cute kid on Belle under the guise of taking her to get help from a "friend." A tiny bit of concern for her feelings would have been nice. It would have taken him all of ten seconds to throw in "I should warn you, it's my ex-wife" before taking her there.
I found myself rolling my eyes quite a bit when Belle would suddenly completely change gears because he'd give her a smoldering look. Yes, finding someone you find attractive is supposed to make you all gushy, but I was never quite able to grasp what she saw in him apart from his supposed sexiness. As a humorous action/adventure book, it works quite well. But it's supposed to be a romance novel, and I just wasn't feeling the romance.
Another Must Read book by Gena Showalter October 17, 2007 After the Atlantis Series I was hooked on Gena's writing. This is a different type of setting, but the setting and subject matter are very compelling. I love all the wonderful interplay between the characters. Working on reading another one of Gena's book now.
A Page Turner that keeps you smiling October 16, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think this book touches the inner childhood and sometimes adulthood fantasies of everyone, who at one stage in their life hasnt wished for something extrodinary to happen to them? Who hasnt wished they were special and had super powers? I know i have.
I think thats why i love this book so much, Gena's writing style is fast paced and quirky, i ended up not only falling in love with the hero and the heroine and laughing out loud at their antics, but i also found myself endlessly amused at the supporting characters.
Gena had the perfect combination of every day girl and tall, dark, mysterious hero. I found the Heroine's attitude hysterical and very sassy but also quietly vunerable, The hero had everything a good hero should - Looks, Charm, Heroic tendancies but throughout the book he had a delightful alpha protectivness for the heroine.
i really enjoyed this book from page one, it kept me turning the pages well into the night.
- if you enjoyed this book i can recommend Michelle M Pillow's Opposites Attract or Bit by the Bug.
Wonderfully Delectable October 3, 2007 I found this book to be a great read. A Mix of all kinds of genre as well as Adult, it flows together very nicely. I recommend this book to anyone who likes some action, love, and naughtiness woven together with clever humor.
