I bought this book and the related cookbook to help me lose the weight I gained while in a long-term relationship and it's really helping. I feel more energized and have the extra "zing" I need to do that cardio class and take those golf lessons. The food recipes are tasty too.

I lost 5 pounds in 5 weeks following this eating plan. I wasn't hungry very often. The recipes are wonderful, and I could eat this way forever.

On the "down" side, you'll have to shop and cook if you want to follow this way of eating. You may have to give away many of the products already in your pantry if you choose to continue this way of eating. I can't see why you wouldn't continue it if it works for you. A principle I garnered is "Eat Food, Not Products." Don't bother with this book unless you are ready to make a lifestyle change that includes shopping, cooking and meal planning.

I think it's a great book. I wish there were a vegetarian version. I have eaten vegetarian for many years, but made an exception to try this way of eating. So I'm actually moving on to other weight-loss approaches and returning to vegetarianism, while keeping a number of take-away messages from Ultrametabolism. UM is not incompatible with vegetarianism, but the recipes aren't there.

The idea that you do not need to count calories as long as you eat only from the approved list of foods in this book did not work for me. I loved the foods I was able to eat and the recipes were great (I love vegetarian/vegan eating so it was pretty easy for me) and I think maybe I simply overate. I did this diet religiously for 3 months and did not lose any weight at all. While I'm not really "overweight," I do have a pesky 5-7 or so pounds that I'm always struggling with (I'm only 5'2" so this is a lot of weight for me). This diet did nothing to rid me of that. (I know, I know-- people will say maybe I don't need to lose it but I do). I think if a person is quite overweight and eats a lot of processed foods they could benefit from this diet quite a bit but if you already eat in a pretty healthy way and are close to your goal weight, this is not the diet to help rid you of those last few pounds. I did feel very good on the diet, I had good energy and slept very well and just felt clean.
