The Highway to Knowledge May 9, 2008 The 23 chapters should allow learning in "10 minutes or less". WinFax PRO 4.0 is designed for Windows 3.1 [but can be used in Windows 95]. The 'Introduction' says this is a practical guide that is faster and easier than the original manual. It focuses on the most often used features to make learning quick and easy. The first part (Lessons 1-18) explains how to send a facsimile message. Lessons 19-22 explain how to receive a fax, then view and print it, transform its text for input to a word-processor. [Facsimile messages were invented around 1840, not long after the electric telegraph was invented.]
Lesson 1 explains how to start WinFax PRO, get help, and exit. Lesson 2 tells how to transmit a fax (the modem is treated like a Windows printer) either from an application or from WinFax PRO. The next Lessons explains using a Phonebook, adding a cover page, or attachments. Lesson 7 tells how to use a Twain-compatible scanner to capture an image that can be transmitted. You can send attachments (Lesson 8) or certain files (Lesson 9). Lesson 10 tells how to schedule a fax for later transmission. You can view and preview faxes (Chapter 11), or add notes and pictures to a fax (Chapter 12). WinFax PRO can handle various graphic file formats (p.66). Lesson 13 and 14 explain how to view, cancel, resend, or forward a fax. Lessons 15 and 16 explain creating and updating phonebooks, and creating groups of recipients. Lesson 17 and 18 tell how to edit, create, and change Cover Pages.
Lesson 19 tells how to receive faxes automatically or manually. If you have only one phone line you should choose manual reception. Lesson 20 explains how to view, print, and clean up a fax (removing line noise that shows up as dots or shading). Using Optical Character Recognition allows the text in a fax to be placed into a word processing program (p.114). You can chose the area to be processed. Lesson 22 tells how to manage fax attachments. They can be placed in a folder, then added, deleted, copied, or moved. Lesson 23 covers the management of fax events by sorting, deleting, or archiving them. Appendix B explains how to change the Setup parameters (modem, dialing, user information).
Those using Windows 98 or later version should be using a newer version of WinFax PRO for those operating systems. Since 1994 there has been a change where you must dial a ten-digit phone number in many area codes. One useful feature is the ability to scan documents to create computer data files which can be shared.
