Product Description Women and girls are now becoming addicted at greater rates than ever before-and until very recently women in recovery relied on treatment models based solely on work with men. Harvard addiction and trauma expert Lisa M. Najavits, PhD offers a program to help women explore the often-overlooked problems associated with their alcohol and drug addictions-- such as body image, trauma and violence, relationships, stress, and thrill-seeking. She explores how women differ from men in their addiction and recovery, and conveys a supportive tone to help them embark on the journey to healing.

The second book I recommend to clients November 3, 2008 I'm a recovery coach and after I push Sober for Good: New Solutions for Drinking Problems -- Advice from Those Who Have Succeeded by Anne Fletcher (very gently) on a new client, I suggest that he or she buy this workbook. Yes, men have found it useful too! Perhaps Dr. Najavits' work with people with post-traumatic stress disorder has given her this exquisite sensitivity. The exercises she suggests are well-planned and grounded in the reality of women in recovery. It is ultimately a kind book. Her harm reduction approach also fits with the experience that I and others working in the field of addiction recognize: You meet the person in need of help where she is right now, not where you think she should be!
I love this book! September 16, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
It is inspiring and beautifully written. I now have 6 months clean time because I read it every day.
Thank you, Dr. Najavits! March 9, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Without this book, I would still be using drugs. This is one of the few books I've read that allowed me to really look at issues of gender in recovery. I did all of the exercises, and each one brought new insights and knowledge. Every once in a while I go back to them. Thank you, Dr. Najavits!

Judging from the other reviews of this book, I guess you either love it or hate it. I fall into the negative camp unfortunately. There were parts that seemed distant and unrealistic. On the whole not a very moving book. There are plenty of other great texts on this topic to choose from. Don't waste your time here.

i read this after reading this author's other book; with each one, i felt incredibly moved and helped. i'd recommend this to anyone (female or male) with a substance abuse problem.
