From the author: Companies are finding they can no longer afford management layers that add little or no value, whether they are measuring that value in decision speed, manufacturing cycle time, customer satisfaction, product innovation, communication consistency, and/or size of management payroll. The principal thrust of this paper is to explore how best-managed companies have successfully implemented a delayering initiative. We review research on delayered companies, as well as results of a survey we conducted of Fortune 1000 companies, to identify those factors that facilitate delayering efforts. We also review the experiences of one company that has successfully delayered, Standard & Poor's (S&P) Ratings Group, a unit of McGraw Hill. Our survey, as well as S&P's experience, indicate that delayering is fundamentally an organization change that transcends organization design. Successful delayering required several related changes, including performance measurement, rewards, and development processes. These processes enable delayering to occur and to persist.
