Robie is suspected of a new rash of gem thefts in the luxury hotels of the French Riviera and he must set out to clear himself. Meeting pampered heiress Frances (Grace Kelly) he sees a chance to bait the mysterious thief with her mother's (Jessie Royce Landis) fabulous jewels. His plan backfires however but France who believes him guilty proves her love by helping him escape. In a spine-tingling climax the real criminal is exposed. One of the creamiest of all of Alfred Hitchcock's films, To Catch a Thief is something like pure pleasure. Begin ticking off the ingredients of this 1955 movie and you'll get the picture: Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, the French Riviera, champagne, fireworks, cat burglary. Mmm, it already feels good. Grant plays a retired thief who becomes a suspect when valuable things begin disappearing along the Cote d'Azur. The diamonds hanging from the well-sculpted neck of Grace Kelly would appear to be the newest target, but it's just possible that actual romance might also be wafting through the Mediterranean air. The lightness of the story keeps To Catch a Thief from being one of the masterpieces of Hitchcock's great run in the 1950s, but it is very difficult to cavil about the sunny locations, Grant's elegant aplomb, and Kelly's shrewd withholding of her sexual interest beneath the ice-queen exterior. John Michael Hayes provided the amusing script (which stretches double entendres to their limit, especially in a romantic discussion of fried chicken), Edith Head the splendid costumes. If the movie has any weight at all, it's in proving that at this point in his career Hitchcock was consumed with charting the tricky terrain of male-female courtship; if issues of trust are treated here with a light touch, they nevertheless matter as much as the mechanical working-out of Mr. H's suspense stories. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars Really Great Alfred Hitchcock!   August 23, 2008
This is a light Hitchcock movie, probably not one of his greatest, but pretty close! The film does not focus on murder or mayhem or even tragedy. It is all about stealing jewels! If you thought that jewel thieves were interesting, this is your movie. If not, here the movie grows on you and you won't care about it being about jewel thieves. The acting is superlative and funny. It is not made in a serious manner and that is great. The movie is about being on vacation, seeing the French Rivera and being with wealthy people who have their jewels stolen. It's fun and light.

5 out of 5 stars "You're somewhat egotistical."   July 16, 2008
....and that is only one great quote from this movie. I love anything Hitchcock, and this film is no exception--but if you're looking for a suspense filled edge-of-your-seat thriller like Vertigo or North by Northwest, this isn't it. Despite that, it truly showcases the range of Hitchcock's brilliance, and his ability to create varying tones in different movies. A little more frothy and visually enjoyable than most of his films; it's shot entirely at the Cote D'Azur in the South of France, tempting me considerably to become an expatriate.

If you want a movie that will leave you feeling lighter after you watch it, rather than feeling slightly disturbed, as some of his movies do (although I admit that I enjoy being disturbed quite often), this is the one to do it. The dialogue between the characters is priceless--clever, witty, and dated enough to make it new again. A must for any good movie collection.

A great classic movie! Cary Grant and Grace Kelly make a great romantic combination and when coupled with Alfred Hitchcock what could be better? See if you can find Hitchcock in a cameo in this movie. He always inserts himself somewhere in his movies, sometimes more obvious than others. This is definitely a "Must Have" for those Cary Grant collectors!!! And the Collector's Edition has some nice Extra Features.
