William Seltzer Rice (1873 1963) was born in Pennsylvania but moved to Northern California in 1900, when the region s Arts and Crafts movement was flowering. A talented and prolific watercolorist, Rice also became devoted to block printing and made numerous prints of Northern California landscapes, from the Sierra Nevada to the Pacific. This calendar reproduces twelve of his evocative prints, among them San Francisco Bay, The Blue Pacific, Fallen Leaf Lake, and Redwood Monarchs.

This calendar of Arts & Crafts Block Prints by William S. Rice is stunning. The prints are simple and yet intricate, the colors bold and yet subtle and the variety of scenes speak to the heart. There is a harmony of color and a flow of lines which takes one into the print. 2009 will go by like a travelogue.
