Put the telescope away; the North Star mentioned here is a human body, not a heavenly one. And like Polaris, which has guided sailors for centuries, the human body's gut feelings and emotions can help guide a wayward soul back to his or her "essential self." In this absorbing combination of detailed self-awareness exercises and true stories from her own counseling experience (equal parts sobering and hysterically entertaining), Harvard-trained sociologist Martha Beck invites readers to explore their heart's desires and the vast social webs that keep such desires in check. The goal is not to forsake the "social self" and indulge every emotional impulse of the "essential self." Rather, Beck gives readers the tools and the encouragement to achieve maximum happiness by harmonizing these typically divergent voices.

Beck (author of Expecting Adam) admits that repairing a damaged emotional compass and setting out on such a vital journey--which often involves painful realizations and changes--"has all the combined attractions of suicide and childbirth." But the payoff, she concludes, is a love affair with real life. To that end, she walks readers through a lengthy exercise to evaluate their current lifestyle's pleasures and pains, teaches the process of listening to the body for directional cues, describes how to extract "soul shrapnel" (healing all those nasty, self-defeating emotional wounds), and provides an intriguing "Map of Change" to achieve an authentic life. Beck's impressive knowledge, her engaging (if somewhat irreverent) voice, and her ability to parse this scary process into achievable steps make her a new champion in the self-help arena. --Liane Thomas

Product Description
"The North Star -- Stella Polaris -- is a fixed point that can always be used to figure out which way you're headed. Explorers and mariners can depend on Polaris when there are no other landmarks in sight. The same relationship exists between you and your right life, the ultimate realization of your potential for happiness. I believe that a knowledge of that perfect life sits inside you just as the North Star sits in its unaltering spot. You may think you're utterly lost, but brush away the leaves, wait for the clouds to clear, and you'll see your destiny shining as brightly as ever; the fixed point in the constantly changing constellations of your life." -- Martha Beck

As the creator of Life Designs, Inc., Martha Beck has helped hundreds of clients find their own North Star and figure out how to fulfill their potential and create joyful lives through her lectures, seminars, and one-on-one counseling. In her new book, she shares her step-by-step program that will guide you to fulfill your own potential. You'll start by learning how to read the internal compasses already built into your brain and body -- and why you may have spent your life ignoring their signals. As you become reacquainted with your own deepest desires, you'll identify and repair any unconscious beliefs or unhealed emotional wounds that may be blocking your progress. This will change your life, but don't worry -- although every life is unique, major transformations have common elements, and Beck provides a map that will guide you through your own life changes. You'll learn how to navigate every stage, from the first flickering appearance of a new dream to the planning and implementation of your own ideal life.

Based on Dr. Beck's work as a Harvard-trained sociologist, research associate at Harvard Business School, instructor at Thunderbird Business School, and especially on her experiences with her clients over the last six years, Finding Your Own North Star offers thoroughly tested case studies, questionnaires, and exercises to help you articulate your core desires and act on them to build a more satisfying life.

It's exhilarating and frightening to change your life. Finding Your Own North Star is a trusted companion for the journey. Filled with inspiration, wisdom, and Martha Beck's trademark wit, this is the right book for anyone whose life ever took a wrong turn.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, there's a map... who knew?   August 21, 2008
Well, well. This book is an eye-opener. See how things generally are is fuzzy. You're kind of this way and that way, not really unhappy, grateful for being comfortable and trying to figure how much to suck up and whether you should just be glad you aren't in the depressing statistics. And when I say "you" of course I mean me.

Well, you (again, I mean me) can't really stay all apathetic about your deal after you (yeah, whatever) read this book and start thinking about your (I give up) bliss better known as your North Star and then wonder if you really ought to go for it.

The motivating part of this book are the four squares, the steps that start out by you finding out that you are no where near finding your compass, say nothing of the North Star that is yours. And all the steps and phases that get you to what is uniquely your best life.

I think that a lot of pre-thought ideas, intuition and such are easy to ignore, but this book really gets it out there. Thing is, it is easy to get derailed but her descriptors of what each phase is, the pitfalls and all makes the journey much more possible, simply the incredibly difference between having a map and not.

Mostly, I don't like exercises but hers are short, to the point, generally take about a minute. Annnnnnnnnnd, they actually move the ball down the field. Little bit surprising actually.

I thought the stories about people feeling their way through, doing what was fun even if it turned out to be kind of goofy, even silly, even for a protracted period of time, was a good thought. I'm working on that for myself and encouraging others.

Seems like a funny thing to say and I didn't expect it, but by the end of the book I like Martha Beck. Part of it might be that we live in the same geography and have similar family situations, but irregardless I think that if you read the book you'll see her as a wise and cheerful mentor pal who doesn't stand on high, issuing platitudes and sterile explanations, but has been through a lot herself and generously shares it. You (yes, I actually mean you this time) should go for it. Read the book and see what happens.

5 out of 5 stars Martha Beck does not disappoint....   July 13, 2008
Her humor and intelligence amaze me with every book I read of hers. I'm a big fan. This is a timely book for me as I try to sell my business, raise 2 young boys and figure out my next career move. I share the main points of this book with all of my friends. There is a reason why Oprah publishes her work every month in her magazine. Martha Beck speaks to me a lot in this book and I am listening.
