Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Data modeling was hypothesized to be the "salvation" of an organization's data problems. This book aims to analyze the problems encountered and to present a comparative philosophical study of the various approaches. On the philosophical level, the authors explore the epistemology, ontology, and rationality of each modeling approach. While on the theoretical computer science level, a systematic study of the history and development of three major strands of data modeling is presented. This book will be of great interest to all computer scientists using information systems as well as philosophers with an interest in computing applications.

5 out of 5 stars A good explanation of ISD methodologies and future potential   April 1, 1997
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

This book is a review of exisitng Information Systems Development (ISD) methodologies and the place each has had in the paradigm of IS. While providing an in-depth look at the issues surrounding each of the methodologies the authors have also provided a look at a newly developing paragim in ISD, that of neo-humanism.

A book well worth reading if you have an interest in the history of ISD, or you are looking for material on the theories behind each of the methodologies that make up the history of ISD. These authors suggest that there are four paradigms associated with this topic, make up your own mind.

They also include a philosophical perspective on data modelling but this may be a bonus to the main issue of ISD methodologies.
