A Beautiful and Important Work March 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The photographs that are highlighted in "Material World" reveal people and their possessions, people from many countries, rich and poor. To see how many others in the world live gives us only a glimpse of our good fortune here in the U.S. A valuable and timely book.
Fantastic Resource February 25, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I homeschool my two children, and this book, along with Hungry Planet, are among my best resources for teaching my kids economics, geography, and sociology. The families portraits are fascinating, and by the end of the book, you find yourself wanting to pop over for dinner with any or all of them! A picture IS worth a thousand words. Amazing!
Eye Opening February 20, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok..I must confess I have a lot of stuff. Its depressing but true. This was a revelation on Ones possessions around the world. How Western countries have loads of crap and lesser countries have less. This book has a prized spot in my bookcase. I think its a must for anyone taking a hard look at material possessions and how we either take them for granted or wish we had 1/10 of them.
i never get tired of flipping through this wonderous book February 17, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i have given this book to about 10 friends as gifts and all of them always are amazed and love the coffee table book just as much as i do! in fact i have bought the other books in Peter Menzel's series as well! Every time i open it and compare countries, i read something i didnt catch the first time. Even friends who have children as young as 6 tell me their kids like to study the pictures as well!
Makes you think..... February 12, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
It always amazes me at the wealth the people of the United States take for granted. If you want to be fascinated for several hours then pick up this book. If you want to be amazed at the lifestyles of people of other cultures this is the book for you. If you are feeling low about your own lifestyle, this book will definitely make you feel better. People from other parts of the world live much more simply and sometimes, I think, are all the better for it.....
