100 suns is the ultimate photo book! May 21, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
this book is awesome! it has very stunning photos and is just plain cool.this is definitely the best coffee table book for people facinated by nuke technology.
Excellent idea, poorly executed February 16, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I agree with the review about the mushroom cloud in the center of the binding, split in two. That really reduces the effectiveness of the shot.
The idea of this book is great. I think the book is one-of-a-kind...to date I have not found a more comprehensive collection of *photos* in one place, of atomic explosions. That is cool.
But! The book misses the point! I wish there was so much more information, give me some specifications. How wide is that explosion? How tall? As I recall, there was scant info, such as power (X kilotons), but that is way in the back of the book. How annyoing to have to flip around the book to find out what could easily have been printed on the page where the photo is, such as a legend.
Here are a few things that would have pushed this book over the top. - explosive power. - width - height - location - a perspective item, such as the transamerica pyramid, so we can see how big the cloud is. - Etc. Surely there is declassified information available that the authors could have brainstormed, and included...?
I'm guessing the authors didn't want to "pollute" the pristine images with this extra info, however, by leaving out this critical information, we are left with images that fail to measure to their full grandeur. It's like when astronomy books show us pictures of galaxies, but don't tell us how many light years across they are, or how far away they are. Something's missing.
I give the idea of this book 4.5 stars. I give the execution 1.5 stars. The book is incomplete.

I think it is a form of art. Even those who like art, will like this. Excellent quality.
Awesome December 15, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My dad worked on this stuff at that time. The book, in words and pictures, explained a lot to-me, and brought-back memories and discussions to our whole family.
Do Not Buy December 2, 2006 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
The review by Publishers Weekly is incorrect. The review says: "...each photo is printed full-page recto, with the facing verso page containing only the plate number, etc." With that statement I expected each of the photographs to be placed on a single page and not be printed through the binding. It turns out 51 of the 100 photographs are printed through the binding. The presence of the binding in the photograph destroys the continuity of the image making the photograph meaningless to me. If each photograph had been printed in smaller dimensions so as to fit on a single page it would have had far more impact. For example, image 093 has the folded paper and thread of the binding in the center of the mushroom cloud. That isn't authentic. That isn't accurate reproduction. Image 096 IS printed on a single page and is quite impressive. And the paper these images are printed on is guaranteed to preserve your smudged fingerprints. It should have been printed on either matt paper or high density glossy paper for greater impact and longer life. I am sorry to have purchased this book and I'll never buy another book by Michael Light. If you can find an original copy of the 1988 book entitled "U.S. Nuclear Weapons - The Secret History" by Chuck Hansen you'll find some really impressive photographs. They might be smaller than "100 Suns" but they have greater impact.
