Could have been so much more October 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Going to the bookstore I noticed a HUGE display of the Stephanie Meyer's series and it definitely caught my eye. I bought the book to give it a shot. I wasnt aware that it was a young adult book or that it had such a devoted following. My views were purely impartial, but i had mixed feelings. My first problem with the book is the fact that it is told thru the perpective of Bella, which means we the reader miss everything she misses. Everything she doesnt understand, doesnt hear, doesnt see, we are in the dark as well. This just leaves too many holes in the story. I think that was a seriously wrong move on the writers part. Second, the repetiveness of the same emotions, thoughts and concerns got tiring. I felt i was reading a book written by a very talented 16 year old. Lastly, the love story was not deep enough to be believable. Was there a deeper connection other than she being captivated by his good looks and he being drawn to her because her blood is especially alluring to him? Although this book did have lots of problems for me, I did enjoy lots of elements that left me wishing it was written better. I LOVED the side characters of the story. Alice, Jasper and Emmett were fantastic characters and I wanted MORE! I still do. Even though I didnt think that Edward and Bella were truly in love, I did enjoy their interaction on those romantic moments. I cant help but think that the same characters and same storyline in the hands of a better writer would have been a fantastic book.
Best book ever! October 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Completely captivating and makes you want to read the whole thing in one sitting. Love the series, although this is by far the best of the bunch!
Yummy reading! October 14, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just finished the entire Twilight saga, and I loved reading every page of it. I really tried to hold off on finishing it so that Bella, Edward, Jacob and the rest could actively stay in my life, but I could not stave off the number that the suspense was doing to me, so I reluctantly read till the end. Why did I love the entire saga? And what is Twilight's part in it? Well, first and foremost, I would say that Stephenie Meyer is an excellent storyteller. There is little that is left out for the reader's imagination to feast upon. Meyer said that she saw the entire thing like she was watching a movie, and this was also truthful for me. Meyer has a knack for painting a clear picture for you, and part of your mind becomes like an empty house where these characters and their story moves in. Edward Cullen is simply magnificent as a brooding, sexy man, not unlike Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy. Bella is his vulnerable and clumsy object of love which summarily vaults him to a god-like level. It is this introduction into the dynamic between Edward's powerfulness and Bella's vulnerability that drives the character aspect of this novel while the plot emphasizes these characteristics. All the while, you will discover that Bella is really powerful, too, and although Edward treads carefully around her weakly human self, he is impressed by the strength in her humanity as well. Edward has his weaknesses, too, and you'll see those more in the following novels, but in Twilight, he simply shines. I think many will fall in love with Edward Cullen through this novel just like Bella did, and I wouldn't be surprised if Stephenie Meyer intended that!

This was one of the best books I have ever read! Very impressed! I have read all of this collection and am ordering more books written by her, hopefully they are as good!
It's fine as a dime novel, but nothing more. October 14, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
A good friend of mine admitted to having read Twilight recently, although she said she didn't like the other books. I finally became curious enough to take a peek at this.
Twilight, to me, is just a teeny romance novel that young girls might like if they're too embarrassed to buy a harlequin. But even at that, there were a lot of things I was left wondering about in the book (such as, why is Edward in high school when he's a vampire? Why? I mean, wouldn't kids or their parents notice "those flawless people" perpetually enrolled there?). I'd also have to caution any young reader who picks this up, that this book should not set any examples for them to follow or apply to their own life.
Meyer also adds some troubling elements to this story that made me pretty angry. SPOILER ALERT!
There's one part of the book where she actually uses rape as a plot device. I was very upset about this. Bella just basically waits for someone to save her--is this the kind of message we want to pass down to our daughters? That if you're in trouble, your man will save you from everything? And to boot, it isn't even rape, it's gang rape. Four guys. Even if they didn't manage to do anything to her, that would be something a girl would be traumatized over (assault, anyone?). But in the chapters following, Bella pretty much forgets it ever happened and goes back to focusing on Edward again.
The writing is pretty terrible, although it seem as if Meyer hits a moment of inspiration at times. But those times come too far and few in between to say that her writing is something that couldn't be developed further. It really, REALLY needs some development.
I say lower the price of this book to three dollars and give it to a kid who otherwise doesn't like reading. Tell them Bella's behavior is NOT okay and Edward is NOT the ideal man. To believe otherwise would probably yield some terrible results in that young person's life.
