Great Pictures March 11, 2007 I saw the exhibition a couple of years ago in Lyon, France. Big sized pictures hanging all over town with explaning text beside it. Too bad the books there were, what else?, in French. When I saw this book @ Amazon, I bought it straight away. When you look at the pictures you think: what a great job this guy has. Gets to visit the best spots on this planet and makes great pictures of them too. Just recently, end of 2006, I saw a new exhibition in Amsterdam with some familiar pics and some new ones. Too bad there wasn't a book with all new pics, It would have been another great asset.
Sumptuous and Sublime Images March 8, 2007 In Prague last summer there was an outdoor exhibit of a few dozen of the images from this book. I think they were about 4-5 feet wide. I wasn't aware of the work of Arthus-Bertrand before. I returned twice more to look at them. The massive book was on sale but for about 100 euros. The price plus the weight deterred me from buying it. So when I saw it on amazon recently for less than half of that price, it was a no-brainer. The production quality of the images is high. The fold out caption pages are very useful. The essays are generally "non-preachy" and quite-informative. My one complaint, which I think is echoed in another review here or elsewhere on the Web, is that two many of the images in the book are marred because they must be printed on two facing pages with the ususal problems this introduces. Admittedly, having all of the images as fold outs would probably have been too expensive and difficult. Printing them one only one page would not have done the details in the images justice, particular after seeing the big blow ups last summer.
Our home planet as we have never seen it before! January 14, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Whatever country you live in you will find this collection of images amazing. The "Earth from above" features hundreds of astonishing landspapes from around the globe which you will find very interesting to look at. Most of them are breath-taking. A must-have for people with wide opened eyes and most importantly wide-opened thinking. Congratulations to Mr Yann Arthus Bertrand for his outstanding work.
Beautiful, Fascinating, and Thought-Provoking January 12, 2007 I was struck by the depth of thought this book inspired in me. I would find myself lost in thought on almost every page. How on Earth (although I know where on Earth) the photographer knew what it would look like from all of those marvelous "up there"s I'll never know, but I'm heartily glad that he did.
Beautiful but beware of the page breaks January 11, 2007 I have an early full-size edition of this book, and do not regret the purchase. However purchasers should be aware that many of the best views are marred by the big vertical page break right through the central part of the image.
To really appreciate the images it might be best to get a derivative work (like some of the calendars) which allow one to see images unmarred by the page breaks.
I hope the publishers read this sometime and reformat the book to avoid this issue. The images are so beautiful that they deserve it.
