Better Than I Expected August 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have read Ms. Meyer's Twilight series. I didn't really enjoy the entire series. I liked the first book. The 2nd and 3rd I didn't care for. So I was going to pass on reading this book. Even more so after the synopsis. I didn't think I would enjoy a book where two characters would share one body. I also assumed I would get irritated with the storyline. Well, I had second thoughts and thought I would give the book a try. I borrowed it from the library and was in no rush to receive it. There was a very long wait list. Anyways, I finally got the book and was told I needed to finish reading it within 7 days. So I reluctantly stared reading. But as I read it got interesting and more interesting. Then I couldn't put it down. I finish reading The Host in 3 days.
I don't think I need to go into what the book was about, there's enough written in other reviews. I will say it was a very interesting concept and had me rooting for almost all the characters. I would have liked to given it a 5 star rating but there were some parts in the book that kinda moved too slow and I think the book is too long. I'm sure it could have been edited down a tat bit shorter without compromising anything.
Don't expect hot juicy romance. The romance is nice and soft but appropriately conveyed. The friendships grow and blossom. It's a sci-fi book and a good one. I would recommend the book. Enjoy.

Could not put it down. Better than the Twilight Series. Stephenie Meyer always manages to describe passion and love and pain in such a way that you actually feel those emotions yourself along with the character. It is so refreshing to have an author write about love and passion without including sex in the mix. Her books also have that rare quality of sucking the reader into the story, so much so that when you are finally able to pry the book out of your hand for an hour or two while you make dinner, take a shower, or go to the gym, the book stays with you, haunts you. I hope to see more adult fiction from her in the very very near future. Read this book now.

Not since Ender's Game have I read a SciFi novel that challenges how we define humanity and morality like this book. It was incredibly well written, amazing character development and really pressed the reader to question their own personal views and truths. I liked this book better than her other series which may be b/c I'm older than what the Twilight series is aimed for but it was also because this book had bigger questions behind it and was both challenging and stimulating. I read the Host and immediately followed it by Breaking Dawn and can't believe the same writer wrote them. Hands down the Host was a must read.
In that same breadth I sincerely hope that Ms. Meyer does not write a sequel. The ending was powerful, it wasn't completely tied with a pretty bow and the questions you were left with really spoke to the beauty of the book.
A unique and compelling sci-fi novel August 7, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have read Meyer's Twilight series, I'm on the 4th right now, but I can honestly say that I feel that "The Host" is a superior novel. The characters are rich and the apocalyptic feel is fun to read.
The book is about parasitic aliens that come to earth and take over and control our bodies. But things aren't so cut and dry, because our narrator is a host sharing a body with it's previous owner who does not want to vacate. There's action, romance, sci-fi. It's a really interesting book with no slow parts, I read it quite fast because I wanted to know what happens. I've also heard that there may be sequels which I look forward to.
Meyer's Twilight series is okay but to get a better sense at her writing talents pick this book up instead, or first.
