Great Read May 30, 2008 I'll admit, the first hundred pages were tougher than expected, but when the story picked up, it was hard to put down. I'll skip the storyline, as many have already given that information.
After reading the three Twilight stories, I have gotten used to her style of writing. Don't expect The Host to read like an action adventure movie. Just like Twilight, The Host is subtle, depending more on the characters thoughts and emotions and interactions than any big drawn out 'everything rides on this' moments.
The characters are genuine and the storyline carries you through the 500 plus pages easily.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoyed Twilight or who enjoys love stories, b/c that is what the Host is at heart.
Boring and pretentious, a deadly combination. May 29, 2008 12 out of 27 found this review helpful
Slow and un-involving in the beginning, set in a myopic "world" with little outside influence. the writing style reminds me of the pulp style sci-fi paperbacks of the 60's, but without the taught plot and interesting characters. This book and author are obviously the "hot beach read" being pushed by the publisher for 2008, similar to the awful "Ruins" book of last year that was greatly hyped and delivered zero
Perhaps next time.
loved it May 29, 2008 Yes, I agree it was slow to start ... but after chapter 12 (short chapters) it took on a human feel, and I was up reading till 3 AM - just like I had with her Twilight series.
Enjoy!
Good points and bad.. May 29, 2008 I have read the Twilight series, and I am somewhat of a fan. I really enjoyed "Twilight", but the other books did not do much for me. I will be reading "Breaking Dawn", just because I would like some closure to the story. Now to "The Host". I almost didn't buy this book, until I heard that it was an adult novel. However, I am not exactly sure why it is labeled as an adult read, unless it is just purely for marketing purposes or the fact that Stephenie Meyer's writing abilities did improve with this book. For me, the book started very well. I'm not sure why some of the reviewers thought that the story was slow in the beginning. The middle was actually the most uninteresting part to me. I forced myself to read through it though, anticipating that the monotony of the cave life would soon end. It didn't. Overall, I found the beginning of the book to be the best part. I loved the background information given on the Souls. I absolutely loved their side of the story. It was exciting and quite thrilling. I wish Meyer would have made the book a little more about the Souls than the humans. I gave this book 4 stars, because there were some parts of it that had me hooked, and overall, I felt like reading it wasn't a complete waste of my time. Would I consider it to be better than the Twilight series? Yes and no. Bella as a character is much stronger than Wanda. Edward as a love icon is much more desirable than Jared, which I still do not feel like I "got to know" after reading the book. On the flip side, I think the Soul's society sparked my interest a little more than the Cullen vampire clan. The idea of the Souls, their history, and characteristics truly made this book for me. Meyer was on the right track in that aspect.
Great New Take On a Classic Sci-Fi Theme May 29, 2008 Well, we human's are suffering from body snatchers again. Luckily, the imagination that conquers earth has a soft spot for happy endings, a knack for creating real, believable characters, and wields her word processor as a samurai of old wielded his katana. In other words, this fantastic trip to the not-so-distant future, while 600+ pages long is enjoyable for every single page. If you haven't already, buy it! It is definitely a must read and a must add to any library!
