5 out of 5 stars Everything I hoped for and more.   March 3, 2008

Nick Brandt's collection of photography is absolutely stunning. His work is much more akin to portraits than traditional wildlife photography. There is an intimacy between Brandt and his animal subjects which resonates in each photo. Page after page, "On This Earth" shows us the humanity and soul of these animals. Brandt has made a brilliant case for why these creatures have the same right to live on this earth as we do.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Photos   February 27, 2008

The day I got this book I spent almost an hour flipping through the pages and soaking in the beauty of these photos. It was then that I decided Nick Brandt was my new favorite photographers. He captures the African wildlife with so much power and natural beauty that it's almost unreal and his post-processing adds a whole other layer to the photos. I would suggest this book to any photo or animal enthusiast, it is quite simply one of the best photography books I have found.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, breathtaking photography!   February 11, 2008

This is one of the most beautiful 'coffee-table' books I have in my collection. The photos are outstanding, with clear, strong shots of the subject. The book is filled with full-page, high quality photography that will make you wish you'd bought 2 books...one to keep on the coffee table, and one to deconstruct and frame.

2 out of 5 stars Nice, but newer work is much better.   January 26, 2008

I purchased this book after seeing some of Nick Brandt's current work, which is stunning. These photos are less well-crafted than the newer ones, with far too many artsy out of focus, moody shots. I like moody, but I also like for there to be a focus on something meaningful and for me the center of the elephant's trunk or the side of his body doesn't do it when the rest is way out. Engaging shots such as a giraffe peeking through an entry door to a house would be fantastic, but the giraffe is out of focus. It's an "almost" shot, and as they say close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. I know it is hard to let go of that shot that got away, but there are a lot of those in this book, like a photo of a lion and a giant boulder that is completely out of focus, and the lion turning isn't in an interesting pose at all. There are very good images as well, but the 2007 photos are MUCH better with better sense of place, a clear focus of attention to the subjects and far more intensity and emotional appeal. I look forward to a second book, if there is to be one. I don't think I'll spend much more time looking at this one.

This is one of the most incredible books I've ever seen. All the pictures touched me but the chimpanzees were remarkable. This is a book I share with everyone. My daughter and I look at it together all the time. I want her to learn that this earth is not just ours. We share it with these incredible animals. Something we seem to forget.
