Product Description

Winner of the 2008 NAUTILUS SILVER AWARD in the category of Social Change/Activism

In a stunning indictment of the Bush administration and Congress, best-selling author Naomi Wolf lays out her case for saving American democracy. In authoritative research and documentation Wolf explains how events of the last six years parallel steps taken in the early years of the 20th centurys worst dictatorships such as Germany, Russia, China, and Chile.

The book cuts across political parties and ideologies and speaks directly to those among us who are concerned about the ever-tightening noose being placed around our liberties.

In this timely call to arms, Naomi Wolf compels us to face the way our free America is under assault. She warns uswith the straight-to-fellow-citizens urgency of one of Thomas Paines revolutionary pamphletsthat we have little time to lose if our children are to live in real freedom.

Recent history has profound lessons for us in the U.S. today about how fascist, totalitarian, and other repressive leaders seize and maintain power, especially in what were once democracies. The secret is that these leaders all tend to take very similar, parallel steps. The Founders of this nation were so deeply familiar with tyranny and the habits and practices of tyrants that they set up our checks and balances precisely out of fear of what is unfolding today. We are seeing these same kinds of tactics now closing down freedoms in America, turning our nation into something that in the near future could be quite other than the open society in which we grew up and learned to love liberty, states Wolf.

Wolf is taking her message directly to the American people in the most accessible form and as part of a large national campaign to reach out to ordinary Americans about the dangers we face today. This includes a lecture and speaking tour, and being part of the nascent American Freedom Campaign, a grassroots efforts to ensure that presidential candidates pledge to uphold the constitution and protect our liberties from further erosion.

The End of America will shock, enrage, and motivatespurring us to act, as the Founders would have counted on us to do in a time such as this, as rebels and patriotsto save our liberty and defend our nation.

5 out of 5 stars Organize, and fill the streets with protest   October 8, 2008
Can't wait to get the book. Last night I watch the you tube video about this book. I was really impressed with what she had to say. The message at the end, about how it took all of us to turn our heads while getting to this day; and it will take all of us to now get involved to make any difference. This gets to the heart of the problem. We are all to blame.

Here is a link to the 48 minute video by Naomi Wolf: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjALf12PAWc

So, organize and fill the streets with protest. Call your congressman, have the criminals dragged out by the hair, and prosecute. Run an election in your area against your representative if they do not listen. Then go after all the ones who helped them, and drag them out by the hair. When you hear someone repeat the rhetoric from these criminals or the news, drag them out by the hair. Now, we can build something for all to look forward to. And when the world sees that we are taking inventory of all the bad seeds, we may just get some help from others. Until then; it is you, and me dear.

Other good sources: Amy Goodman, David Swanson, Bill Moyers, Howard Zinn.

1 out of 5 stars Historical Misrepresentation   October 2, 2008

During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln jailed war dissenters and suspended habeau corpus for American citizens. President Franklin Roosevelt incarcerated Japanese American citizens during World War II and even attempted to undermine - by "packing" - the Supreme Court of the United States. Yet, today's poltically-motivated critics of President Bush idolize both Lincoln and Roosevelt. Why the double standard?

What is truly laughable is the author's claim that President Bush "controls the press"! Is there anyone in modern American history who has been more demonized by the press than President Bush?!

5 out of 5 stars frightening and powerful   September 22, 2008

Ms. Wolf's book was thought provoking. She addresses the devasting mistakes from the past by Germany and Italy, countries we severely criticized and punished, while warns the reader that we are seemingly doomed to replicate these same inhumane tatics in this country if we do not take action.

It was a very easy and comprehensive read. This book allows the reader great insight into the threats we are facing in this country regarding our rights and civil liberties being gradually dismantled. She reports the steps that are leading us down the slippery slope, and encourages us to take action. It was a very compelling read. I highly recommend this book to everyone, regardless of their political affiliation.

5 out of 5 stars Thinking is not a crime. Yet.   September 16, 2008

As a parent, as an activist, and as someone who is more than concerned with the way this country is heading, I felt this to be an important work to read; not only for myself, but for my children.

We are living in a time where, if you do NOT assimilate to the governmental belief that the Resident is right, and the Resident is good, and the Resident is doing what is best for this country, then you are a seditionist, a terrorist, and possibly even worse.

Please note the 'Resident' comment is intentional. He is not my President, nor is he ours.

We seem to be on the verge of 1984, where we have always been at war with Eurasia, and Emmanual Goldstein is your hidden enemy.

Think now...because right now, thinking is NOT a crime.
