Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
There are many things you should never, ever, ever do.

Like sit next to a porcupine on the subway (ouch!). Or hold hands with a lobster (double ouch!). Or take a shark to the dentist (triple ouch!).

Bestselling author JUDI BARRETT and imaginative illustrator JOHN NICKLE give us a raucous look at the perils of taking giraffes to the movies, goats to the library, and pigs out to lunch...and other such silly stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures, great fun   September 18, 2008
True, it's the moms who lunge for this book on display. "Oh, here's a funny one." Sometimes they even beg, "Yes, see, look, let's read this story." Is it pathetic to see parents beg for their favorite story? Naaah, they should be able to have some fun. And Never Take a Shark to the Dentist is definitely it.

1 out of 5 stars an then what?   July 17, 2008

As the title suggests it is a book about things you are not suppose to do. The idea is appealing (in principle) and the title is attractive. however the set of examples are strange and are hard to grasp by the relevant ages (which I assume is between 1-4 years old if we consider that we have about a sentence per page). At this age range some kids did not make it (yet) to the bank. My son who is fascinated by sharks (one reason I bought this book...) was completely poker faced during the whole reading. Nice illustrations but not really talking to kids. I'll go back to Seuss and check if I missed one his books instead. Not recommended.

As a grandmother and former teacher, I am always looking for new and clever children's books! This one is simply wonderful! So engaging and so clever! The illustrations enhance the wonderful and creative theme! BRAVO! Certainly a book I have earmarked for future gifts. My grandchildren adore it!

5 out of 5 stars My Grandchildren Loved This   April 6, 2008

So now if you ask my almost four year old twin grandsons if they should take a shark to the dentist, they shriek with laughter and say no. They loved this book and now want to read it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Goofy fun   March 25, 2008

This read-aloud book has wacky, detailed illustrations that are certain to bring on the giggles. Kids will eat it up.

Each two-page spread has, on the left, straightforward advice on what not to do. On the right is a full-color illustration showing why the advice is good. For example, "Never go to the bank with a raccoon" is accompanied by an illustration of a crowded bank with everybody but the raccoon holding up their hands. All the bank patrons are looking on with horror at the little innocent raccoon, who of course looks like a robber with his black face mask.

Other spreads warn against sitting next to a porcupine on the subway, shoe shopping with a centipede, knitting a hat for a moose, inviting an ant to a picnic, taking a giraffe to the movies and more. The illustration of the giraffe in the movie theater is a foldout that shows the giraffe's long neck extending up and through the roof.

Much of the charm is in the details. In the giraffe illustration, the giraffe isn't only blocking everyone behind him with his neck, he is also slurping on a very, very long straw that is made up of normal-length straws slid together. In the centipede illustration, the bug is holding a tiny Visa card with her front foot.

Another reason the book will make you smile is that everyone in it is an animal, but doing human activities. Rabbits fill the movie theater, eating popcorn and drinking soda, watching two rabbits kiss on the big screen. Everyday scenes on a subway, in a cafeteria or in a mall are populated with animals acting and dressing like normal people.

It's all very silly, and sure to be a favorite at bedtime.
