ultimate kauai guidebook October 10, 2008 This book is especially good for those that wish to hike and find secret places. We did some of this - too hot for us in October! We found that we were flipping through the book to put things together. I would prefer to have each side of the island in one section. Also, there aren't maps in many of the sections, so you have to flip back to the maps when you are in a section, say adventure. Also, everyone and his brother has this book so the places aren't so secret any more. I would say it's a must unless you plan to stay in your condo or hotel and not venture out.
The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed October 7, 2008 This is a really useful book -- highly recommended. It's packed with aerial photos, which give an outstanding perspective on beaches and help provide a visual idea of whether a spot is worth exploring. Other photos give a nice preview of Kauai. There are good maps, detailed driving instructions, and candid reviews based on local knowledge. The writing is lively, with occasional humor. It's one of the best guides I've ever purchased (and I have many, including others about Hawaii). The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed (Ultimate Kauai Guidebook)
Created Too Much Confusion October 2, 2008 This book caused more confusion on our trip to Kauai than it did help us. The way the book is organized is strange - you have to flip to too many different sections to find out information on a certain area. We did a North Shore drive/hike and had to use the North Shore Attractions section, along with the Beaches, Adventures and Dining sections and it created way too much flipping around to make it helpful.
There are also instances where it discusses an area in words and mentions that a certain spot is worth seeing, but in the map of the area nearby, it does not show the location on the map. That provided much confusion as we were trying to find places.
It also mentions the hike on the North Shore and does a poor job of really describing what the hike is like and what is needed. The first 2 miles is the most common hike and it is actually a pretty difficult hike and the right shoes are a must. From the book, you do not get that impression at all - it really only mentions that the 11 mile hike is the tough part.
All of these issues, along with multiple spelling errors and the corny way in which they describe certain things make this book not worth it. We used the Fodor's book for Maui and it was MUCH better.
Excellent guidebook! September 2, 2008 I thought this book was excellent and really helped make my trip to Kaua'i a great one. I followed the recommendations closely and was happy every time. It could be organized better. For example, the region overviews and the activities in each region are in separate sections of the book which made it hard to figure out where I read something to go back to it. Once I got used to the structure of the book, I was ok. Highly recommended.
Great Book August 31, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
We read the book cover to cover, and with our previous experience with Oahu Revealed, found the same informative detail on Kauai. My wife would not put the book down for two evenings. It has really gotten her interested in the trip, which adds so much more enjoyment. The book explores all aspects of the island and does a great job.
