Product Description In the bestselling tradition of Big Russ and Me, Americas most visible sports commentator tells the stories of some of the most dramatic moments in American sports and pays tribute to the man who inspired him to pursue his broadcasting dream his beloved father, who has fallen victim to the ravages of Alzheimers disease.
Vividly written in exciting, you-are-there replay, Always by My Side gives readers an insiders look into an unprecedented sixty-three-day stretch from February to April of 2007 when Jim Nantz became the first broadcaster to call the Super Bowl, the Final Four, and the Masters. Because Nantz was unable to share the voyage with his dad, however, this remarkable journey through Americas premier sporting events took on a bittersweet tinge. Nonetheless, the devoted son felt his fathers presence every step of the way, and used this championship odyssey to celebrate the people, venues, and moments that tapped into all the goodness that his dadand his dads generation represent.
In recounting the highlights of more than two thrilling decades with CBS Sports, this broadcasting hall of famer recalls the legends of the industryDick Enberg, Curt Gowdy, Jim McKay, Chris Schenkel, Pat Summerall, Jack Whitaker, and otherswho sparked his imagination and shaped his style.
Always by My Side traces Nantzs career, from creating his own imaginary studio as a boy to his college days rooming with future PGA Tour golfers Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister to his successful network audition at age twenty-six. Along the way, readers are treated to an array of memories, including Nantzs special relationship with the former president George H. W. Bush, as well as his friendships with such sports royalty as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Mike Krzyzewski, John Wooden, and many others. Poignant stories that explore the theme of fathers and sons who have bonded through a common love of sports complete this sparkling narrative.
Always by My Side promises to be the most cherished Fathers Day gift of the year.

Great gift July 5, 2008 I gave this book as a Father's Day gift to my son, who lost his Dad a few years ago. We both read it. What an inspiration.
A little sugary-sweet, but you have to tip your hat to the man June 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like me Jim Nantz is from the Houston area, so based on that commonality I've always been a fan. This book details a professional career that's gone very right and a personal life that's posed one significant challenge. There are points where everything that is written, said, etc. has been so perfect that you just want a strong cup of black coffee to wash the sugary taste from your mouth. Then you read the challenges with his Dad and it makes you want to tip you hat to the man and hope that I would react in the same way that he's done.
Great behind-the-scenes and name-dropping book that makes a good summer read.
Fathers Day gift June 23, 2008 I enjoyed reading Jim's book and gave it to my two sons-in-law as a Fathers Day gift
Not just for golfers June 21, 2008 I am not a golfer, but Jim's book grabbed me and in many places brought tears. His relationships with his father, his family and his coworkers and friends was exemplary. The personal things he shared were great. It gave me an insight into the lives of the many people he has meet in his career. Everyone should have such lasting relationships!
Read it! June 17, 2008 This is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time. If you follow sports AT ALL - especially golf - then you will love this book. Jim Nantz weaves the story of his career in with the people he has come to know, along with his reflections from those relationships on father-child connections. Have a hanky ready at all times!
