Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Northwestern Pacific Railroadthe Redwood Empire Routeonce stretched its shining track from Humboldt Bay to San Francisco Bay. Created by the amalgamation of 42 different companies, the North Coast railroad network ranged from the Sonoma Prismoidal, an early wooden monorail, to broad-gauge logging lines built to be hauled by horses. In between were the two-foot Sonoma Magnesite Railroad, the narrow-gauge North Pacific Coast, and standard-gauge lines. Determining the route of major highways, this versatile transportation system also incorporated electric interurbans, ferry steamboats, sternwheel riverboats, tugs, car f loats, and unusual connectors like funiculars and scenic tourist railways. From the time of its formation in 1907 until the 1970s, Northwestern Pacific trains and boats were loaded with passengers and freight.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must for railroad history buffs!   June 15, 2008
This book is pleasant light reading, with many historical photos of the track, equipment, buildings, and even boats of the NWPRR. Since traces of that railroad still exist all over Northern California, this book is a useful guide to finding the old main lines and spur tracks.

A very good book featuring photos that I have rarely, if ever, seen. While not the definitive book on the NWP, it is a great suppliment and an absolute must have for the NWP fan. Lots of early photos and information on the railroad. A great tribute to an often overlooked railroad.

Great production of historical photographs and educational captions. Soft cover with all black and white pitctures. Material on freight, passenger, and ferry traffic. Links company origins to present day situation. Good reference for railroad historians, modelers, and students.
