Editorial Reviews:

Product Description

One the grandest ocean liners ever constructed, the HMS Queen Elizabeth 2 has regularly captured headlines during her illustrious 40-year career. Starting with her revolutionary design and construction, this delightful history follows the ship on to her years of military service and through her encounters with engine failure, stowaways, storms, and collisions. The story includes hosts of celebrities who fell for the liner’s old-fashioned charm and grace. This is the ultimate history of one of the finest and most beloved ships.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Account of QE2's Career   August 21, 2008
This is an excellent account of QE2's varied career over the decades. Thatcher strips away many of the myths surrounding the QE2 to get at the real story, that lies behind decades of corporate spin, forgetfulness, wishful thinking and occasional down right fibs. For example, rather than trot out the line about how the QE2 got her name 'named after the first ship' (not true) Thatcher goes into the full background - the original intention, Her Majesty's ad-lib on the day, the complications this caused in the country (Scotland) where she was not the second Queen Elizabeth, but the first, and the elegant solution Cunard of 1967 came up with, which subsequent managements have lacked the finesse to match. If you want the real story of QE2 - you will find it here.

1 out of 5 stars sort of a dud   April 15, 2008

The book was a bit of a downer, focusing on a lot of the problems faced by the QE2 over her 40 years as the queen of the seas. The book is also plague by poor layouts and a bevy of uninspired photographs.
