A Grand View of the Canadian Rockies January 18, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is one of two mountain photography books that I received as Christmas gifts. Canadian Mike Grandmaison shows an obvious love of his subject, as well as skill and artistry as a photographer. He breaks down the Canadian Rockies into six areas/chapters from north to south. The Rockies are shown in varying moods of light in all their grandeur. He uses reflection effectively. He also presents small details from time to time. Ben Gadd provides a written introduction to the book, sharing his intimate knowledge of these peaks and a bit of geologic history. Highly recommended.

A New Rockies Book With High Expectations August 3, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have been looking for a quality hardcover book on the Canadian Rockies for some time, one that really showcases these beautiful mountains through great compositions and high quality printing - unfortunately this one does not quite meet my expectations. The book is quite well priced for its size (240 pages) and it does include a large number of scenes I have not seen in other books, so it is nice from that viewpoint. There is a good mix of mountain scenes, trees, flowers, "moving water" and animal photographs. There are around 200 photos, so there is plenty to look at. Nice to see a book on just landscapes - no people, roads, buildings, boats or hotels here. There are two main areas that let the book down a little, as I see it : 1. The photos are not printed on high quality glossy paper (which would probably make the book much more expensive) and that results in the photos not looking as sharp or clear as they could be. 2. Most of the photos have been taken from areas accessible by roads. This is great if you want the book as a souvenir of your trip through the Rockies, reminding you of what you have seen. I personally would like to have seen more photos of back country scenes, places I will never see. A number of spectacular places are not in this book - like Assiniboine area, Tonquin Valley (Ramparts), Lake O'Hara area, Marvel Lake, Berg Lake, Edith Cavell from Cavell Lake. Overall a nice book on the Rockies but I am still looking for "the one" I need to satisfy my requirements on this part of the world.
