Actually titled: 1809, ESSLING the first defeat?.
I have not been able to see n1, n2 is about WWII 1944... and n4 Fontenoy... I thought it was a pure Napoleonic series... poor marketing AGAIN! by Histoire & Collections...
In my humble point of view at Aspern-Essling the French were trashed around and the Austrians failed to convert a victory into a success because of the steadfastness and pluck of Napoleon's soldiers (which refused to be beaten!... even with odds of two to one or more...).
I also think, Histoire&Collections has wisely (in the present nearly recession times...) decided to launch a cheaper version (à la OSPREY...) of books about a battle.
For that price you get in the paperback smaller format... illustrations by Andre Jouineau in this present one, but also nice graphics and orders of battle...
Why it is not titled Aspern-Essling? (much more often used name of the battle).
Hope some day they finally get the guts to do Waterloo! (that famous "French Victory"!... if you know what I mean...).
Seriously, the Napoleonic hardbacks produced up to now are a must have and bigger (but much more expensive books).
This format and the plus of the historical prints + Letrun drawings is a nice addition to their range. They must be careful with the text and the printing of it (was it too rushed?) next time... even in the spine it says FIRS instead of FIRST... and it is annoying to read "1.500 sabres" with the "1" at the end of one line of text and the "500" at the beginning of the next line... just to mention a silly mistake... there are several like this... but the use of color and diagrams is very good and compensates largely the fact. Just hope next volume would get more careful editing!.
If they include in it (MEN AND BATTLES SERIES) Bailen, Salamanca, Talavera, Vitoria etc we will finally get the British&allies uniforms of the peninsula!...
A functional and worthy addition to any Napoleonic library...

PS: Will it be too much to ask for ACW volumes?... guess OSPREY has now serious competition...
