Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Mel Brooks' uproarious version of history proves nothing is sacred as he takes us on a laugh-filled look at what really happened throughout time. His delirious romp features everything from a wild send-up of "2001" to the real stories behind the Roman Empire (Brooks portrays a stand-up philosopher at Caesar's Palace) the French Revolution (Brooks reigns as King Louis XVI) and the Spanish Inquisition (a splashy song-and-dance number with monks and swimming nuns.) It's Mel and company at their hilarious best.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY Rating: R UPC: 024543371625 Manufacturer No: 2237162

Amazon.com essential video
Mel Brooks's 1981, three-part comedy--set in the Stone Age, the Roman Empire, and the French Revolution--is pure guilty pleasure. Narrated by Orson Welles and featuring a lot of famous faces in guest appearances (beyond the official cast), the film opens well with Sid Caesar playing a caveman, then moves along to the unlikely but somehow hilarious juxtaposition of Caesar's soldiers (the other Caesar, not Sid) with pot humor, and ends on a dumb-funny note in the French bloodbath. This is a take-it-or-leave-it movie, and it works best if you're in a take-it-or-leave-it mood. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Mel Brook's: History of the World Part 1   October 2, 2008
This is My favorite Comedy by the Legendary Mel Brooks. His Son Max wrote World War Z so buy that one too.

4 out of 5 stars Still waiting..........   October 1, 2008
Even after 28 plus years, this movie is still funny. One of the "high" points is SUPER JOINT with the late, great Gregory Hines. Seriously, this is funny stuff. Ya gotta watch out for "the first art critic"!! Oh piss boy!! I can spend all day reciting the funny one liners, but do us all a favor, buy this movie, watch it when the kids are asleep.

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly funny, daft, inspired comedy   September 22, 2008
This movie has a huge number of very funny moments. It's one of Mel Brooks' funniest films, and I laughed out loud during a great deal of this.

5 out of 5 stars Another classic from Mel Brooks   June 29, 2008
While this isn't as good as "Blazing Saddles" and "Spaceballs," it's certainly better than "Dracula: Dead and Loving It." This film will make you laugh your @$$ off as Brooks brings out the ironic/slapstick humor from the Dawn of Man, the Roman Empire, the Spanish Inquisition (one of my favorite scenes), and the French Revolution. Gregory Hines, Sid Caesar, Madeline Kahn, a cameo appearance of Juhn Hurt, and the voice of Orson Welles make this movie shine. Highly recommended for all Brooks fans, and for those who actually want to see some humor in world history.

2 out of 5 stars It seemed a lot funnier 25+ years ago...   April 1, 2008
After more than 25 years of its theatrical release, I still had a faint memory of some good laughs.
Well, maybe the problem is me (25+ years older), but it doesn't seem that funny anymore.
If you are a teenager than there are some good laughs in it for you, but more mature crowd will probably dismiss it as rubbish.
My wife slept halfway, but I somehow managed to go all the way to the END. 2 stars for old days sake...
