Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Florida East Coast Railway has been the speedway to America's playground for more than 110 years. FEC offered some of America's finest rail passenger service until 1968 and remains the freight lifeline of Florida's east coast. The railroad arrived on the shores of Biscayne Bay on April 15, 1896, and it reached Key West in January 1912. That feat etched both Henry Flagler's and the railroad's names in Florida and U.S. railroad history. FEC's operation is so precise and punctual, its roadbed and motive power so well maintained, that it is the benchmark for every other railroad in the country.

5 out of 5 stars Florida East Coast Railway (FL) (Images of Rail)   July 9, 2008
A fascinating book revealing part of Florida's history... Henry Flagler's quest to build this railroad was responsible for much of the development of southeastern Florida and the Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys ... a must read for any Florida history (or railroad) reader ...

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Collection of Photographs   December 8, 2006
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

There have been a huge number of railroads started in the United States. Most of them are now defunct or have disappeared into the holdings of one of the few Class I railroads. The Florida East Coast (FEC) is an exception. The FEC (or at least its predecessor) began in 1858 and is still operating today.

This book, one of a series put out by Arcadia publishing is dedicated to the story of the FEC. The story is told mostly in pictures, an amazing collection of pictures that begins with an image of a map from 1884. It soon gets into pictures of the construction of the famous 'railroad going to sea,' the extension of tracks from Miami across the keys down to Key West.

All in all, this book is an amazing collection of pictures combined with enough descriptions to explain what is shown. It is clear that Mr. Bramson is extremely knowledgeable about 'his' railroad.

4 out of 5 stars Telling the rest of the story   November 8, 2006
Growing up on Florida's east coast, the FEC was the hometown railroad. Very little has been written about this interesting carrier, and most of what has, tends to focus on the Key West line and operations during the Florida boom years, leaving gaps in the story of the postwar and modern eras.

This book is an excellent companion to Mr. Bramson's earlier work - "Speedway to Sunshine," and we see many more images of interest to anyone curious about what the railroad accomplished AFTER the hurricane wiped out the Key West extension.

I especially enjoyed seeing black & white photos of the line's E and F units in blue, rather than their fancy dress colors of the early streamline phase. While you can't squeeze everything in, this comes close.

This is a darned good all-in-one reference for the nominal fan who wants the straight 4-1-1 about this railroad, for the hard-core FEC enthusiast who wants everything written about the line, and even for the Florida historian interested in the development of the east coast.

Two thumbs up from this reader!
