Product Description
The most treacherous, and scenic, geographic obstacles in the world are crossed by narrow gauge lines running in the mountainous regions of Colorado and New Mexico. Stunning color photography highlights the more than 100 miles of narrow gauge line still operated by historic tourist railroads today. Accompanying this stunning photography is informative text covering the historical background of narrow gauge steam, each of the railways in operation, and narrow gauge locomotives.

Not really about steam locomotives.......... September 2, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is more an overview of narrow gauge railroads in America, with a little locomotive info thrown in. Pictures are good, but I would have liked to see more focus on the trains themselves. 3 stars if you can get it cheap like I did.
Great Photos and text at a very reasonable price December 10, 1999 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Most railroad or steam locomotive books are quite expensive and are only average in content and layout. Narrow Gauge Steam Locomotives has above-average content and excellent photographs. The book is done entirely with color photograps (except for historical photos). The photos are dramatic, candid and colorful. The captions and the text complement the photos and there are some great sidebar articles. This book is not a comprehensive review of narrow gauge power, but a very nice review of both contemporary narrow gauge operations and locomotives and some information on historical development. This not a highly technical book, but the content is certainly of better quality than many of the bargain priced books. It is very readable and as far as I can tell accurate. I buy a lot of rail-related books and given the quality of the photographs, the text and the overall design of the book, this a real value at the cover price.
A bit weak on locomotive, great on N.G. railroads. August 15, 1999 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
This book deals mostly with narrow gauge railroads. I had hoped from the title to gain more iformation on locomotives then I did. If you need a book that gives a good outlook and summary of narrow gauge railroading this is a great one. If you want pictures of narrow gauge railroading this one is hard to beat.
