Editorial Reviews:

Description
She was a 365-days-a-year railfan excursion...she was the train that behaved like a caribbean cruise ship, inviting you to loaf and look, dine and drink, with ultimate destination beside the point! - So wrote David P. Morgan, past editor of Trains Magazine in the July 1976 issue of that magazine. Now from the camera of noted photographer Emery Gulash comes the most awesome experience: a complete trip on the California Zephyr! Filmed in 1965, when the CZ was at it's ultimate, Emery's camera takes you from dome to trackside, from the cab through the 'Big-10' curves and tunnels West of Denver, From Chicago to San Francisco. Never has there been such on and off train coverage of probably America's most well known and favored train... The California Zephyr. Thrill to the incredible diversity of scenery, the first class service, F-7's all the way to the West coast, incredible cab scenes from Denver-West through tunnels and the Big 10 curves, and thrilling run-bys as only Emery Gulash can provide. Filmed in gorgeous 16 mm color, this is a DVD you will watch over and over again. Live the luxury of the past, through mountains, across the plains, meets with the other CZ's as well as freight and passenger trains...and a surprise meet with Burlington steam loco 5632 as she passes the CZ on a for railfans only runby! Approx. 72 Minutes Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo

4 out of 5 stars a railfan's view   June 18, 2008
A film about a train can be presented as a general travelogue, or, in this case, a specialized coverage. But if you choose the latter, you need to explain certain inconsistencies, such as, how the Wolverine Limited can start out as a regular train from New York to Detroit and turn into a mixed train between Dearborn MI and Chicago. I was intrigued by a shot, westbound out of Denver, of three trees and the curving track in the distance, the very same trees I photographed in a shot in one of two films I have made on this subject. The sounds of the train from the engineer's cab made me feel relieved that as a passenger one is not subjected to such noise 8 hours a day. There is a wonderful shot of the eastbound CZ in Illinois disappearing into the clouds of a steam excursion train proceeding in the other direction. The important thing is that there are at least seven films, including two made by myself, on the subject of a train that, in its original form, has vanished from American railroading.

5 out of 5 stars A Golden Video about a Silver Lady   January 23, 2008

This video certainly lives up to it's promotional billing. It brought back memories of my trips years ago on those cars and along the scenic route (at least from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa to Salt Lake City). Probably the most unusual feature, is from Denver to Salt Lake City, the film was shot from the inside of the lead locomotive. What an interesting view as well as hearing all of the radio communications to and from the railroad dispatcher. A must have for any western railroad fan.
